In addition to work in the surgical suite, anesthesiologists spend time in the X-ray/Medical Imaging department sedating infants and small children for CT and MRI scans. Adults and children old enough to cooperate by holding still do not ordinarily need this service.

Anesthesiologists spend a fair amount of time in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and some of them work in chronic pain management.

It's always painful to see sick children, but often a doctor can intervene in such a way as to improve their lot.

Anesthesiologists mostly put surgical patients under anesthesia in preparation for surgery, and then monitor the patient through and after surgery. Pediatric anesthesiologists do this for children going to surgery.

Hours or days prior to surgery, the anesthesiologist meets and interviews the patient and parent(s). Most of the rest of the job is done in the surgical suite during surgery or recovery room post-operatively, and some time dictating reports. Naturally, anesthesiologists work closely with surgeons.

Anesthesiologist used to be exclusively physicians who had earned MD degrees from accredited medical schools. Today, some advanced and highly trained nurses called nurse anesthetists do the job as well. The have been to nursing school and done additional anesthetist training as well.

Whether it is painful to see sick kids depends on you. Even if it is now, with exposure, most people can take it and do the job, even if they feel compassion for their patients.

they specialize in "putting kids under" for surgery

knocking them out for tonsilectomies

they (and the surgeon) chose the various methods used to block pain or render the patient unconcious and monitor them while they are under.

usally the patient is pre-sedated, somewhat giddy and maybe a bit nervious at the whole process.

The anethesiologist only sees that for a few minutes before putting them under.

Understand it takes 13 years of college level work to get that job

although I am not such a person,he/she would be responsible for the administration of anesthesia to a baby or child. Obviously they require different meds and amounts of the meds because of their small bodies.
