The PS3 says I can choose 720p or 1080i or 1080p.

Can 720p TVs support playing PS3 games in 1080p?

Ideally you want 1080p but it sounds like your TV does not support it. The next best is 720p...at least for gaming. Some people prefer 1080i but I'm content with 720p. Your TV supports 1080i and 720p, so choose one, I suggest 720p. You cannot get 1080p on your TV. My PS3 did not select the best when I first plugged it in so I had to change the video settings manually, you may also have to do so.

No they cannot. The PS3 should automatically detect the best setting to use, in this case, 720p. If you want, you can go to Display Settings under the Settings menu and select 720p as your default resolution just to be sure.
