Was he a draft-dodger too?

2007-11-30 08:50:00 · 17 answers · asked by The Wiz 7 in Politics & Government Military

jon_gal..: whether he was a democrat or a republican, he is still the same man. Clinton was given a deferment to fulfil his RHODES Scholarship. So, why does this make him a draft dodger & not Giuliani?

Johnny 2: In case you didn't know, there was a draft during the Viet-Nam war. If you were called & didn't serve you were sent to jail unless you ran away to Canada or got a deferment.

Jon_gal: Do you have a link to your sources, or are we just supposed to take the word of a Clinton hater?
Dave_Sta...I think the point the wiz was trying to make here is that as you have pointed out, many others on both sides got student deferments too, so why do the cons always single Clinton out?

Here's the true answer, he got out of it twice with a deferment. he was never in the military. He let the others die while he made his career sweeter.

Giuliani did not serve in the military during the Vietnam War. He received a student deferment while at Manhattan College and another while at NYU Law. Upon graduation from NYU Law in 1968, he was classified as 1-A, available for military service. He applied for a deferment but was rejected. In 1969, MacMahon wrote a letter to Giuliani's draft board, asking that he be reclassified as 2-A, civilian occupation deferment, because Giuliani, who was a law clerk for MacMahon, was an essential employee. The deferment was granted. In 1970, Giuliani received a high draft lottery number; he was not called up for service although by then he had been reclassified 1-A.[15][16]

Lots of people didn't got to Vietnam, especially students. A lesson to stay in school!

“Any suggestion that he was dodging the draft is totally, factually inaccurate,” said a senior Giuliani campaign adviser who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the topic. “He opposed the war on tactical and strategic grounds.”

Giuliani, who once said of the Vietnam war, “I disagreed with it,” obtained an occupational deferment in 1969, when he was a law clerk. Although critics say such deferments were rare, the Giuliani campaign disagrees.

“He wanted an occupational deferment, which was very common at the time, because he wanted to be a lawyer,” the Giuliani adviser said.

When Giuliani’s deferment expired in 1970, he drew draft number 308, which was never called. His campaign suggests this proves he was not a draft dodger.

“This is an important point: After his deferment, his name was entered into the lottery — at least once — and he had a high number,” the adviser said.

Did some research for you and acording to the mighty word of wikipedia, he graduated college in 65 so he would have been eligible.
However, in 1970 he joined the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York. Willing to be he had some pull since the draft was discontinued in 73.

Wow, is this going to become the great qualifier for presidential candidates for the foreseeable future?

Let's see -- Rudy Giuliani -- in the 60's he was in college, and considered the priesthood . . . oh, look!! In the 1970s, he was a LIBERAL DEMOCRAT!!!

But this appears to be how he managed to avoid service:

"Upon graduation, Giuliani clerked for Judge Lloyd MacMahon, United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York. So, how about the other Republican candidates?

Mike Huckabee -- born in 1955, so he was just too young to have been drafted. I guess he's off the hook.

Duncan Hunter -- born In 1948, so he was old enough. ENLISTED in the US Army in 1969 and served in Vietnam from 1970-71 -- so he must be a draft dodger in the eyes of the Democrats, because he wasn't drafted, he ENLISTED. Well, I guess he's off the hook.

John McCain -- born 1936, so he was old enough. Served in the US Navy as a pilot, and was a POW in North Vietnam from 1967 to 1973. Since he was in North Vietnam during the war, he must be a draft dodger. R-i-i-i-i-ight!

Ron Paul -- born 1935, so old enough to have served. Drafted into the US Air Force during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1963, and served in the USAF until 1965, then in the Air force Reserve from 65 - 68. Oh, no, not the USAF Reserve -- he MUST be a draft dodger!!

Mitt Romney -- born 1947, so certainly old enough. Served as a Mormon missionary in France in the late 60's, then had a college deferment in the early 70's. DRAFT DODGER!!!

Tom Tancredo -- born in 1945. Eligible to serve in 1969, and tried to sign up, but told the docs he was suffering from depression and received a 1-Y deferrment. DRAFT DODGER!!

Fred Thompson -- born in 1942. College deferrment from 1960 - 1967, and then went into law and politics. DRAFT DODGER!!!

Has anybody asked this question of Hillary Clinton? Barak Obama? John Edwards? Any of the other Democrats? Gee, I wonder why not? Let's see how the Democratic candidates stack up . . .

Barak Obama -- born in 1961 -- thus too young to have served in Vietnam. Came of age during the all-volunteer Army. So I guess he's off the hook.

Hillary Clinton -- born in 1947, so she'd have been old enough. But she's a raving, military-loathing radical feminist. Oh, and she's a woman who couldn't have been drafted anyway. So I guess she's off the hook. But she married a DRAFT DODGER!!!

John Edwards -- born in 1953, three days before I was born, so he's definitely of age to have been able to serve at the tail end of 'Nam, or be drafted. Hmmm -- oh, he was in college and had a deferment for his freshman year, and then probably got a high draft number. DRAFT DODGER!!!

Joe Biden -- born 1942, so certainly old enough. College deferments in the 60s, then he was elected to the Senate in '72. DRAFT DODGER!!!

Chris Dodd -- born in 1944, so certainly old enough. College in the early 60's, then the Peace Corps until '68. Then he joined the Army Reserve and served until 1975. DRAFT DODGER, JUST LIKE BUSH!!!

Mike Gravel -- born 1930, so too old to have been drafted. So I guess he's off the hook.

Dennis Kucinich -- born 1946, so certainly old enough. In college from 1967 until 1973 -- six years in college??? DRAFT DODGER!!!

Bill Richardson -- born in 1947, so certainly old enough. College deferment kept him out of military service . . . DRAFT DODGER!!!

I don't know why Giuliani never served in Vietnam? Why didn't John Edwards, Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton ever serve in the military? (note: I didn't say Vietnam, I said in the military.)

I was going to ask if you were asking a question or if you were making a charge, then I saw you details and I knew that you were making a charge. Do you have the proof to back it up? It is not required for anyone to serve in Vietnam. It is required that people act with honor in their lives. People who went to prison for their beliefs acted with honor, people who became conscientious objectors acted with honor, people who fled to Canada, or lied to avoid the draft (clinton) did not act with honor. If you were serious then you would point out which candidates served in the military (McCain, Hunter, Paul, et al.) and leave it at that. That is if you were serious...

Oh, I love this...Guiliani was a democrat in the Vietnam years!!! LOL

Better go back and reread your history. bill Clinton got a deferment because he promised to join ROTC and then he didn't. A liar? Absolutely. So to sum up, Clinton got his deferment long before Oxford so don't bring that up. Of course he didn't leave up to the terms of his deferment so he is a dodger.

Why single out Giuliani?

Aren't all of the top Presidential candidates aside from McCain non-veterans?
