"Thank you" is ALWAYS a proper and polite response to ANY compliment.
Anyone who yells at you for saying "thank you" has a few screws loose.

You're response was correct. The other person was rude, let's face it they gave you an unsolicited compliment to begin with. Just ignore them, "Thank You" is always the right response to a compliment.

You SHOULD have asked HER what was the "right" response! Thank-you is certainly appropriate! (You would
have been rude if you had said .... "Yeah, I know!"
She "may" have felt that you were being conceited .... but
again ... your response showed "gratitude" and "appreciation" for the compliment!
When I am complimented on physical attributes or clothing;
I say "Thank-you" .... Depending on how I am feeling at the
time .... I may add .... "Boy, you really made my day!"

Thank you was fine. She may have wanted a compliment back though. Some older books will tell you that when you receive a compliment you should thank the person and respond with a compliment in return.

"Thank you" would be the correct response. The only reason it wouldn't be I could think of was if she wanted you to compliment her back. I always say "thank you", "thats vary kind of you to say" , or something like that.

"Thank you" is a perfectly adequate response.
Often when a female compliments the appearance of another female, she seems to expect a compliment in return, and "thank you" isn't it.
But you're certainly not obligated to say anything more than an expression of gratitude that they found you attractive.

I learned to say the following a long time ago.........
I give the person a polite smile and simply say, "Thank you, it's always nice to receive compliments."
That usually works for me.

Thank you or a smile is correct, I believe. Maybe she wanted you to be a little more coy and say "who..me? No!" :-) Thank you is fine to say though, its a compliment, nothing else is required!
