I was at Chipotle getting some food today, when the man ahead of me in line was being a jerk to the restaurant employee. First, he was ordering two beers so he had to show his I.D. Because he had a license renewal paper the employee had to look it over with someone (I'm assuming to find the birth date). The customer said rudely, "It's not a library book." Then for some reason after his credit card was swiped muttered, "Jesus Christ." There was something else after that that was said to his girlfriend, not sure what though. All of this took maybe 45 seconds. So maybe 30 seconds longer than usual. He was just being a jerk for no real reason. What really got to me though was that the employee was a Hispanic woman, and I have a strong feeling he wouldn't have said any of that to a white person. So during this situation I was fighting an urge to call him out (i.e., let him know how rude he was being), but I didn't want to create a scene either. Would you have spoken up?

I've seen this happen all too often (at Chipotle restaurants too). Usually in that situation, I don't call them out, even though I'm really tempted to.

I usually just console the person behind the counter. "Wow, that guy was really a jerk, huh?" and smile and be polite. It usually helps.

Honestly, I don't know.

It depends on my mood, on that day. As well as how far he takes his attitude with the employee.

He does not have the right to treat her in any way bad, unless it's provoked by the employee. And then he can't take it out on her, he must discuss his problem with her/his manager.
His attitude is quite pathetic.

But considering the type of person I am, and being tanned-skinned and a native of New Zealand, I would have spoken up. I have no tolerance for racism, ego-trips and just downright rudeness.

NOT ON!!!!!!!!!

Your time will come, that type of person, never fails to turn up, when you least expect them.

Bad attitudes never die out.
They are born and bred!

Don't make assumptions based upon no information! Just because someone is hispanic, doesn't make everyone prejudice. However, what you can see is that this person was rude, but you can't correct everyone's behavior. You don't know what kind of character he is and the situation could have gotten uglier. The employee will encounter lots of rude people and s/he will have to deal with it. Lots of rude people in this world! You wanted to do the right thing because you were sympathetic, but you were smart to hold your tongue.

No I probably would not have created a scene but I would have let the Hispanic lady know that I did not approve of this jerks behaviour. Let her know that not everyone is a rude pig. Letting him know this would not have helped the situation as rude pigs do not care what anyone thinks.

Of course I would have said something and have in the past. I have been in customer service for a long time and one thing I have seen happen is a man will talk to a woman in an whole different way he would talk to another man.

I've seen customers be so rude before, and I have never said anything. I will, however, try to give a sympathetic look to the employee if I can. I wish I had the nerve to say something, but I don't!!!

No, it would have probably turned uglier had you said something. Besides, this jerk probably got a little something extra in his food! LOL.

Don't escalate the situation unless the jerk engages you.
