I was at a funeral for a person who was not all that religious, but the priest talked for an hour about himself and Hell, but said nothing of the person in the box. I was very offended. I am not Christian, but she was. I felt that he should not have tried to convert the audience to Christianity during the funeral. Even some of the more religious people there thought he went overboard. Thanks for all the great answers!

Personally, I don't think so. But I've been to funerals like that, too. Certain types of evangelicals feel that they need to preach the message of Christ to everyone at all times. A funeral is a prime opportunity for them, because they've got an audience that may consist of people who don't normally attend their church, plus the audience is already thinking about mortality due to the fact that it's a funeral. To a preacher who sees things this way, it's a golden opportunity to get some souls saved. My church doesn't do this, but some people think it's a good idea.

Well, why in the world did you have a priest at the funeral if the person was not at all religious and you were offended?

Chances are, you were not the one whom made the decisions on whom to have speak at the funeral. You were a guest at the service and you were uncomfortable with being singled out as the sinner we all are.

You have choices, and next time if the ones putting together the funeral will not bow down to your demands of how the service should be conducted, I suggest you do not attend.

Yes, I find this particular subject to be on of my pet peeves.

My family is the not all that religious that you describe, yet, everytime they need a preacher for a funeral or wedding, they come calling on me to ask my preacher to do the service.

What I do not understand is why they do this. The preacher has no ability to get this person into heaven, and if they have not accepted Gods truth before death, its to late for them anyway. Now, if the ones living want a preacher at the funeral and then get mad because the preacher speaks the truth, why in the world did they want him there in the first place.

Find a public speaker and pay his fee for performing a service around your choices and then you can continue to stay away from the church and God that you only find convienient for certain services or rituals would be the better word for what you are describing.

But to answer your question, if you ask a preacher to speak, be prepared to have to listen to the truth.

Because he didn't know the person who had passed, and didn't come prepared. There is nothing he can say or do that will make one ounce of difference on the deceased distination, as it was to late. As I've stated over and over, do away with the religion, Jesus was the Son of God and man, he offers us Salvation, if we truly believe he is the Son of God died to save us from sin, truly accept his gift of life, recieve the Holy Spirit, and recognize 3 persons in one we will be saved. do away with the religion! Jesus was not a religion, He was the Son of God And the Son of man. Good Luck!
