you really should use a matt.... in fact, a couple of them would be best.... you don't want the glass to contact the doily..... and be sure to mount it to something that won't hurt, it, also... like if you used felt and it got damp, the felt would bleed color off onto the doily..... so pick a nice fabric that's colorfast....if you can get glass that's UV resistant, that will help, too, incase it's ever hung where the sun might get on it......

That is going to depend upon the size of doily and the size of frame. Matting adds depth, color and largeness.

I have framed doilies, antique handkerchiefs, childrens' artwork, using only fabric or fancy paper...have bordered with ribbon...using a bit of "Stick-Um" to hold in place while putting in frame. I hope your doily is one made by a loved one.

Stick pin doily's shape onto cardboard. Spray starch it. Dry.
Unpin doily.

Have side facing you that you wish to be the back. Elmer's Glue & water - - and brush onto the back cords of doily and apply onto the color backing you had picked & fits the frame. Or go to hobby shop & get decopage to brush onto back of doily. Dry well. If nothing is damp on top side of doily, can apply pressure with book, glass, etc.. or occassionally apply pressure with hands so it will adhere tightly to your backing.

You also need a glue gun and some matting. Put it in a nice picture frame and wha la... you got some art.
