Oh my gosh...reality check. Some people have outside dogs that absolutely LOVE to be outside and don't even WANT to come inside. Some dogs are too big, hyper, or shed too much to be on the furniture. Some people can take VERY good care of their dog even if it lives outside and let's face it, they get much more excersize out there.
Anyway, the answer is this: if you CHOOSE to keep your dog outside during the day, or when you're not home, or if your dog just plain LIKES it outside, you need to make sure they are old enough to be taught the boundaries of the yard, what they can & cannot do (chew plants, scratch the deck, etc) and that they have had all shots/vaccinations so that they are healthy & won't be vulnerable to things in their environment.
Dogs are ready for outside life from the age of 4-6 months. By the age of 2 your dog will be fine outside but it will take time for it to adjust to the new environment so I suggest that you keep it out for a few hours each day & give it plenty of attention for the first few weeks, then bring it in especially at night. Then over the next few weeks, leave it outside for a few more hours each day, still bringing it in at night. Finally, let it stay outside overnight but always remember to give it plenty of attention while outside. Don't just stick it outside & forget about it (God forbid, the people here might hunt us down & eat us).
You may find that it doesn't like the outside environment but BELIEVE IT OR NOT PEOPLE, some dogs do! WHAT A SHOCKER!!!!! Always make sure it's not too hot/cold & bring it inside when it is! Good Luck & please don't waste your time making rude remarks about my answer--she asked a question, I gave her an answer!

My dogs are indoor and outdoor dogs. They like to go out and play a good portion of the day. They let me know when they want back in. They do good inside too. But they like the space they have in the backyard. They all sleep indoors at night. I don't leave them out there if i am going to not be going back home to check on them though.

First off i have an outdoor dog which loves to be outside, who's cared for, loved and healthy....so everyone who thinks it is sooooo cruel to have ALL dogs outdoors is pathetic! Personally i would keep a smaller dog like a westie indoors but i think it is at a good age to let outside. Westie always seemed like the indoor type to me, but i think it would be better off in a backyard then in a crate indoors so it can play and potty when it wants. Make sure you have proper shelter for it though seeing winter is around the corner...Good luck!

They can be any age. Dogs are naturally outside animals. They know how to survive the seasons. I have two small dogs outside in a pen with a dog house and tarp over half of the pen. They love it out there. They are a lhasa apso and a dashund/chihuahua/terrier mix. It's not like I put them out there and forget about them.

If there is an age, don't tell our dog--she's 6 and still an indoor dog, even though she weighs 90 pounds! If you want to have an outdoor dog, though, you probably should start when they're under 1 year--at 2, they might get confused.

There is no certain AGE that means a dog should live in the backyard in a doghouse! What did you think? We were going to answer 3 years or something?

Sorry - I'm not into leaving dogs outside in a dog house. If they can't be in the house then you shouldn't have one. Just my opinion.....
I have 3 dogs.....They are all indoor dogs.
And to the avator below...jjrodeor...are you f-ing kidding me? Why did you bother to get a dog...that puppy should never have been left outside. That makes me sick!
A Westie is a little dog that should be an indoor dog. I just don't think a little dog should be out even from 9 to 3. I have a fenced yard so the dogs can come in and go out in the warm months. Especially if the dog has been in for 2 years its mean to now make him go out for the day. He's used to being in and won't understand why he now has to go out.

Build a normal kennel + an extra roof about 4" air gap and similar on the sunny side wall and end. Similar effect to a flysheet on a tent. You could also erect a flysheet as a large porch so outside the kennel entrance is shaded, an automatic water bowl might help too.

Dogs should not live in a dog house in the back yard. Dogs should live in the house as part of the family, or they should find themselves a new family to love.
