How can you lower the bad cholesterol and raise the good cholesterol without drugs? I have diabetes (for 3 months now) also but it is totally under control with diet and exercise and no meds. I eat lean red meat about 1-2 times a week, if at all. I exercise some. I have a job where I sit most of the time although I try to be up and about. I have lost 15 lbs. I stay away from the sugary items, breads, cakes, candy, cookies... no alcohol for last 20+ years. I need some fresh ideas. Thank you.

I don't smoke. I took a statin once and I broke out all over so that was the end of that. I cannot take prescription drugs without having problems which is why I try to do the herbs and vitamins. My numbers: bad was 142... good was 26.

Hi Manymees

I can't understand nwhy you're concerned. You've been diagnosed recently with diabetes, yet you've already got it totally under control, with diet and exercise and no medications! You also seem to be in total control of your diet .... so well done, you sound like a model patient!!
Now regarding cholesterol: I'm presuming your's must be high because you're asking about this. One thing you must realise that diet has little effect on blood cholestrol levels, so you may have inherited this risk factor genetically. So talk to your Doctor about this, becuase it appears that you are following a healthy low cholestrol diet. If your cholesterol levels are still high despite your diet, you may need to take a cholestrol-lowering drug, especially because you're diabetic.
Well so what, one other tablet a day that will protect you against heart disease, stroke etc should be no inconvenience to you. Because you have diabetes always keep a check on your Blood pressure, Cholesterol and of course your Blood sugar levels, and if you smoke - quit the cigs!!

Yes, you can lower bad cholesterol as well as increase good cholesterol at a same time. You should eat oats, red wine, salmon and fatty fish, nuts, bean, tea, chocolate, avocado, garlic, olive oil. If you are overweight then try to lose your weight.

a high fiber diet will help to lower the total cholesterol value, so try to get the recommended 30 grams daily.

to increase the HDL:LDL ratio you need to increase the intake of unsaturated fats and also get in 2-3 grams of omega fatty acids daily
