She is an amateur with a great deal of interest in photography. She currently has a point and shoot camera with a 10x zoom. The lag between pictures and when you push the button drives her crazy. Most of her shots of the family, but I would like a lens with a good zoom but yet is very versatile. What should I go with?

She is getting the rebel xt body only for Christmas, and I want to buy the lens for her.

The Best All-Around All Purpose Zoom Would Be The CANON® EF 28-200mm f3.5-5.6 USM $449.95 @ Circuit City OR The CANON® EF 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 USM $379.99 @ Circuit City Or FOR SHEER SPEED The CANON® EF 85mm f1.8 @ Circuit City $449.95

The 85mm Makes An Excellent 'Portrait' Lens As Well As A Good General Purpose Lens. The Balance Of Sharpness And Speed Is Almost Unbeatable For The Price.

But, If You Must Have A Zoom The 28-200mm Offers The Best Wide To Telephoto Zoom In Terms Of Fast Speed And LOW Distortion For The Price. For Auto-Focus Cameras I Highly Recommend Using The Manufacturers Brand For Best Compatibility As The Focusing/Zooming, Metering And Flash Are Often "Linked" To The Lens Micro-Circuitry.

I would get her the Canon 17mm-85mm IS lens- I see it on e-Bay used for a buy now price of $425, but think that is a bit high for a used one. It's great in low light without flash because of the image stabilization- I've had good results down to 1/15th of a second without camera shake induced blur and once you take available light photos without nasty, harsh flash you or your wife will be hooked- just remember to change the white balance setting. At the wide end it's perfect for family group shots and at the 85mm end, it is a perfect portrait lens. If your budget is unlimited, by all means get an L series lens, but this is not usually an amateur's first choice. If the kids are into sports, then you will be happier with a lens that zooms out to 200mm or greater. Everyone will tell you not to buy the all-inclusive Tamron 28-300, but for photos that are rarely printed larger than 4 x6, it is a pretty handy lens and they run about $300.

You didnt mention if you have a Rebel XT body. If you dont, having a lens wont make any difference.

I've heard good things about the 28-135mm. It's just above $400.

For great quality, though, you should look into a lens in the L series. But, the cheapest lens in this area is 70-200mm f4 for $30 shy of $600.

Hope this helped.

Sigma 18-200 (canon mount) or if you've got more cash, you could get her the optical stabilization one.
Try Onestop Digital, I found they where the cheapest.
