I am a PROUD owner of a designer dog, a Bichonpoo (Bichon Frise and Toy Poodle). When I was looking for a puppy I didn't say "I want a designer dog". I wasn't looking for a status symbol or to keep up with the Jones'. I went to every local shelter and a few not so local, I went on puppyfinder, petfinder and a few more NO ONE had a small breed puppy. I was only allowed to have a small dog as per my landlord. I wanted a puppy because I have multiple sclerosis and wanted to start training the dog from day one to be a service dog and a therapy dog. Small pure breed puppies were out of my price range. I found a private breeder that only bred Bichonpoos and Maltipoos. Esperanza is the best dog in the world. She is the sweetest most gentle soul. She loves everyone and every pup. She is super smart. So you can see I am not a designer dog owner by choice but rather by circumstance and I don't regret my decision for one minute. The ONLY problem I have is the negative e-mails I repeatedly receive from Yahoo Answer users bashing designer dogs.

You hit the nail on the head!! That is why these people pay for papers that are not worth the ink they are printed on!!! AKC would never give papers for these so called "DESIGNER DOGS"
If you bred say a lad male to a female Shepard in every state the pups would all look different! there is not set conformation, or look set to the breed because is is not a breed, It is just a mutt. I love mutts and I have 2 of them but you are right the pounds are full of designer mutts and they cost way less.
Anyone buy these dogs or breeding them needs to be a lot better educated!!

I think designer breeds are bred by people who are either irresponsible and looking to make a buck, or people who are innocent enough but just don't know what they're doing. It's ridiculous to spend $900 on a dog that doesn't even have the benefits of a purebred (benefits as in, a predictable personality, being able to show them, etc.).
Besides, it's way better to adopt a dog from a shelter, and I think that there are way better mutts in shelters than crossbreeds that you spend a fortune on.

I totally disagree with it. A mix is a mix is a mix...NOT a "New" breed. I've argued with plenty of people over it here and while a few have listened, most do not.
People still buy them though because of a lack of education. Some scamming BYB Puppy Miller has told them that the mix in question is a "Breed" and so, they believe it and pay big bucks for it. Or, worse yet, they see it in a Pet Store and pay over $1000 for it.
I'm sorry, a Chidorkiedoodle will never be a recognized breed and you have just supported a Puppy Mill buy buying it!

I don't mind the dogs themselves. It's the people that give them the names, like they're an actual breed, and then sell them as a purebred. You're right, they're mutts or mixed breeds. I work at a shelter/boarding/training facility, and whenever I see "cockapoo" or "goldendoodle" or whatever listed as the breed on the card, it irks me. They are not breeds, they are mixes. The people who pay breeders for these dogs are just getting scammed.
IMO, the people who have to give a designer name to their dog are ashamed to say they have a mutt.

I'm totally against it too! Most people do it because it's the trend, everyone wants the cute, micro-sized, non-shedding dog who is the 'perfect' companion. The doodle thing is just to get people to buy the pup. Would you rather buy a pizza or a hand kneaded dough topped with warm tomato sauce, smothered in gooey cheese, and topped with fine freshly ground Parmesan cheese. Same thing right? But one name sounds more appealing. Some people also think all dogs from shelters are rejects, dogs people don't want because they just go crazy and can't learn anything. They OBVIOUSLY haven't seen a shelter dog before. i think shelter dogs give back twice as much love that you give them =)

A mutt is a mutt by any other name. I wouldn't spend $900 to buy any dog...all of mine are rescues (and the shlelters are over full of pure breeds as well as "designer" breeds) so go save a life and use the other $800 to donate to rescue work!

I think it's funny that people pay pure bred price for a mixed breed dog, and they think they got something special. Then they get the dog home and it's not hypoallergenic, it can't be housetrained, groomers don't want to deal with them, and they fail the obedience classes over and over again.
The sad part is, they end up at the shelters, because people can't control them, are sick of the shedding, and the out of control behavior. These little dogs die cause people thought they were getting something special and rare.

I am in Purebred, but I am not against mix breed. If you have to buy a non purebred. I'll adopt a mix from shelter. Definitely not spend big money on a "designer". Because, there are just mix (mutt).
