Well we know the bible(the book itself) is real....but thanks to Josephus a lot of the stories he wrote about cities have been proven true through archeology....but things like Eden, the flood, Jonah, etc....who knows...
The only way to be sure if it's true is to pray...and if you don't believe.....just try it, you might get an answer if you're really interested.

One among many reasons I accept it as being true is that it was written by eyewitnesses within 15 years of the actual events (I'm primarily speaking about the gospel writers - the apostles including Paul). There were plenty of people around to refute what they wrote had it not been true, yet archaeology has never discovered any contrary writings written at the same time refuting what the apostles wrote.
Other writings of antiquity about other real life people like Plato, Aristotle, et al, were written by others about them no less than 150 years after their deaths but we never hear of anyone questioning the reliability or authenticity of those writings, questioning their reliability. Wonder why that is?
The Bible is the most scrutinized literature in the history of the world. Wonder why that is? Could it be the prince of this world has deceived those that are willing accomplices?

If you read the Torah, the ORGINAL Old Testament, Jesus actually didnt fulful the prophecies.
There actually is evidence that many of the stories didn't happen. There is also evidence that some things in the Bible are somewhat true.
That being said, I am not discounting ALL of the Bible as wrong. But your statement is incorrect.

Accuracy of the information.
For example, if a math book claimed that PI=3.0, would you trust it?
If a biology book claimed that bats were birds, would you want your kids to be educated from it.
As your first responder says fulfilled prophecy. But look at the prophecy in the bible. It is either:
So vague that it is meaningless. (Revelations)
The prophecies were written after the events happened (Anything in the book of Daniel)
The events rewritten to fulfill the prophecy (Jesus born in Bethlehem, ancestry of Jesus, in fact most of the messianic prophecies for Jesus)
Just plain wrong. (Ezekiel's prophecy that Tyre would be destroyed and never rebuilt - both wrong.)
There are claims in the bible that are demonstrably false. Therefore it either needs severe editing to remove those parts, or should be ignored all together.
There are factual parts in it. But then there are probably more proven facts in the Odyssey and the Iliad. That does not prove the existence of Zeus, Aphrodite, etc.

Jesus and the disciples quoted the old testament throughout the new testament. the old testament was started about 1500BC. It was the scriptures used in the Jewish synagogues even after Jesus died. What makes you think it is a legend? The Dead Sea Scrolls are on display in San Diego right now and some of these old parchments verify what we have in the Bible today. They found an almost complete text of Isaiah and it matches over 90% what is in the King James version of the Bible.

Watch the History Chanel, they are finding proof of burial sites of people written about in the Bible every day. A.&E. had a program on where they found paintings showing the passage of Moses through the red sea.
I would rather live my life as if there is a God then die to find out that there isn't a God than to live my life as if there isn't a God then die to find out that there is.

Even if there was scientific evidence, how would you know that was true vs experiencing it via "the matrix"
I prefer to get my own revelations, even though I can't know what is real or true. It then is a personal choice, no?

First of the bible isn't in the fiction section its in theology section 220 in Dewey not too far away from Psychology and Philosophy.
That being said, it is impossible to prove that the bible is True. However the stories in the Bible tend not to hold up particularly well to historical inquiry.

Two ways
1. Blindly believing anything that you read and hear - God said it, I believe it. Hypothesis Proven
2. Logically looking at the evidence and coming up with a time line of how we came into existence.

I worship God, not the Bible. The Bible is just a tool to understand God better. If the Bible never existed I would still believe in God.

There are many contradictions in the Bilbe. The New Testament confirms the Apocalypse of Peter which claims that Jesus never died on the cross!
