I've never waited on line for longer than a few minutes for the Met, unless it was for a special exhibit. Whether you buy tickets online or not, you still might find lines for coat and bag checks. Last time I was there they were searching everyone's bag for security. That took about 10 min.

No need to buy tickets online. You can buy them in person without too much hassle. And remember, you DON'T have to pay the full price. That's just a suggested donation. The old signs (I mean back in the 70s) used to say "Pay what you like, but you must pay something." They took down those signs, but it still holds true. You really can pay whatever you want (though the clerks do sometimes give you a nasty look these days - they didn't used to. I always pay what I can afford and try not to be too cheap about it. But I never pay the full price! It's ridiculous!)

As for lines, they can be long at Christmas time, but they move quickly. I've always found the lines for the coat check to be terrible, actually! And the whole museum can be awfully crowded at this time of year. Try to go during the work day, and try to go to the sections of the museum that are not so busy. There are plenty of little corners where most tourist don't get but are still wonderful, like the Asian galleries.

Enjoy!

The lines can be long, but it's worth it. It is a 'suggested donation' so I pay what I can afford.
Email me. I know more tricks about getting around the Museum - I go there 3 times a week!
