and if it's customized torture, does god get to choose or does he let satan do the choosing?

Enigma - So you believe it's customized torture? Whatever your worst nightmare is, god inflicts that on you for eternity? Ok, thanks.

Eli - So you believe god tortures everyone the same? I assume that's burning. Thanks.

It sounds like there's general agreement among you that you feel god will look into the lives of the damned and customize their eternal torture for them...to maximize their suffering.
Thanks for all the answers.

Nothing like believing in a sadistic God.

Man creates his own torture. Each person forms his own special hell. All are free to leave when they want, but are so caught up in the guilt that they feel they have earned it. Heaven and hell are a made made story to make people obey the church blindly. We all form our own afterlife, be it good or bad. I don't believe God would create man, give him one chance in life, then torture him for eternity because he did not choose right. We all have multiple times through this world to improve our eternal soul.

The degree of punishment will be commensurate with one's sin against the light which one has received.
One good passage that indicated degrees of punishment is Luke 12:47-48: "That servant who know his master's will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be BEATEN WITH MANY BLOWS. But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be BEATEN WITH FEW BLOWS. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked". Other verses on this issue include MAT 10:15; 16:27; Rev. 20:12,13; 22:12.
Jesus affirmed that the wicked "will go away to ETERNAL punishment, but the righteous to ETERNAL life" (Mat 25:46)

Satan gets to choose what's right for each customer. For example, a heavy metal rocker who ends up in hell gets a permanent stay in the Wayne Newton room.
Of course, Heaven has a Wayne Newton room, too.

well, lets clear this up.

I know that this is pretty hard to understand in our culture, but the reason that bad things happen is because God loves us...before you all go crazy, hear me out
Why do we have a freewill, given by God?
Is it because he loves us and does not want to control us?
What happens when we use our freewill, and go disobey God(note: everyone does it, its called sinning)?
God gives us his son to cover up that sin committed by us(yes, that is me also).
What happens when we choose to snub our nose in God's face and turn down his gift, and choose our own damnation?
at the end of times, whoever does not accept God's gift, and therefore chooses his/her own destination(there is not neutral ground - Matt. 12:30) is sent into the burning lake of sulfur.

i know that is probably totally confusing, haha i am a terrible writer, so you can message me with questions, if there is any... i would like to attempt to answer some.

My hell is the same as another person's version of heaven. I'm likely to be force-fed an everlasting bottle of Marmite (also known as Vegemite).

If I end up in hell, I will not burn, I'll be forced to listen to the Bee Gees/Steps song Tragedy, on continous loop ad infinitum. Apparently they already use this tactic in Guantanamo Bay.

ALLAH(Subhanna wa ta'ala) will burn the skin off of your body and then regrow your skin to be burned off again. It will take you 70,000 years to hit the bottom of Hell. The water of Hell will be the grease that comes off of the bodies of the Jinn and Humans who didn't follow Muhammad(PBUH*) and ALLAH(Subhanna wa ta'ala) and when you drink the water then your brain will evaporate. You'll be screaming in pain and begging ALLAH(Subhanna wa ta'ala) to let you out of Hell and give you a second chance but ALLAH(Subhanna wa ta'ala) will refuse to answer your pleas. There are two Angels who will interrogate the dead person in the grave. They will ask the dead person 3 questions.
1)Who is your Lord?
2)Who is your prophet?
3)What is your religion?
If the dead person is Muslim and did good deeds then he or she will answer correctly:
1)ALLAH(Subhanna wa ta'ala)
2)Muhamamd(PBUH*) is my prophet.
3)Islam
If the dead person is non Muslim or has more bad deeds then good then the dead person's soul won't be able to answer or say anything and their soul will be tortured in the grave until the day of Judgment. But if the person is Muslim and has a lot of good points; he or she will be shown Hell and a window will be opened in Jinnah(Heaven). The Angels will be instructed to provide the soul with food, drink, and clothing until the day of Resurrection.
The Angel Azrael is the angel responsible for taking the soul from the body. If the person isn't Muslim or has a lot of bad deeds and points then Azrael and his helpers will tear the soul from the body slowly and painfully. But if the person is Muslim and has a lot of good deeds and points then Azrael will part the soul like a drop of water dripping from a glass. Azrael will look like a terrifying beast or demon to the non Muslims and look like "the most pleasent sight" when he comes to the Muslims. Azrael has four faces and four thousand wings. His whole body consits of eyes and tounges. Munkar and Nakir are the Angels responsible for interrogating the dead person in the grave.

From stories of those who have been resuscitated from death and said they visited hell, I believe it will be very customized. One man spoke of seeing people eating their flesh and vomiting it up and the flesh would grow back and they would just keep repeating this behavior over and over. They were people who had been canibals upon the earth. That sounds very customized to me. It also sounds like the individual customized his own eternal punishment.God bless!!

Matthew 25:46 ....."And these shall go away into everlasting torment, but the righteous into eternal life."

In answer to your edit: I do believe that hell will be customized, but not by God but we customize it ourselves, by the lives we live. We also are the ones who condemn ourselves to hell by rejecting salvation. God has offered to save each and every one of us and is not willing that ANY should perish, but He does not force you to accept His free gift. That is up to you to do.

Isolated darkness is mentioned some what also,

Jud 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

If you suicide, you die the same way over and over again for eternity. Adultery leads to hanging by the genitals, and eating feces. Punishments will be in various categories. The person who will be subjected to the least punishment here shall have two shoes of fire on his/her feet. And by their heat, his/her brain will be boiling like a kettle on fire. The person will feel that his/her punishment is the severest and no one else is under more punishment than he or she.
