Where Christians get the idea of all sin being equal is that even the least sin can condemn a person to Hell while no sin is too great for Christ's blood to cover and erase it. In that sense sins are equal in that all people / sinners are condemned and yet none are so bad God cannot forgive and save them.
Sin is described in the Bible as transgression of the law of God (1 John 3:4). But all sin is not equal in consequence. Consider the words of Christ:
John 19:10-11 10 "Do you refuse to speak to me?" Pilate said. "Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?" 11 Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin."
Matthew 11:20-24
Notice Jesus speaks of one sin being greater than another and judgment being more bearable for some than others, because God takes into account the circumstance of their sin. Some were first hand witnesses of Jesus miracles while others knew Him only through prophecy. Those who would see Him from a distance were judged less harshly for their sin. In Pilate's case, those more actively desiring His crucifixion than Pilate was were guilty of "greater sin" than Pilate who partly wished he could free Christ but did not. But this is not to say a little sin is OK ... They all lead to separation from God and need to be dealt with.

What is the definition of 'sin'. ?
This was one of my questions......I discovered that it is not the actual behavior that is the problem.........it is the intention, and the affect that our behavior has on others, animals, and our planet.
In this perspective, all sins are equal, because if the intention is to hurt and cause pain to another living being, then we are creating negative energy.
So, we cannot just make a judgement based on the action, but ask questions, and discover the intention.

well i don't think he looks at is as a rating scale. Like that one was a 3 but geez that guy killed somebody so he's a 10. He just sees the sin. Its whether or not we repent out sins is what he cares about. We all make mistakes, but its asking for forgiveness and not doing it again that makes the point.

God sees all sins equally. A man who kills his girlfriend or a man who cheats on a test would get the same penalty: death.
btw: for those of you who think cheating on a test is too harsh; God will give you the wisdom and knowledge to know what's on the test, so there would be no cheating :D

Not all sins are equal.
There is one sin that is unforgivable. That is to knowingly refuse to allow the holy spirit to speak through you should God choose to do that. The good news is, most of us will never get the chance to commit that sin.
Also note that if you murder someone that person will be present when you are judged. If you stole someones lunch money they would not be present at your judgment.

Hypothetical:
If it's sinful to masturbate and it's also sinful to murder young children in front of their parents, I think there should be a ranking of "sins" based on sheer obviousness.
Whether God sees "sinful" behavior as all the same or whether he thinks one is worse than another... we need to use our own brains a little and realize that some acts are worse than others.
