There must be some serious failures in our public science education for people to claim that evolutionary theory is not widely accepted in science.

They're ignorant. The first clue is their misconception that according to evolution humans descended from monkeys. It's hard to take them seriously when they don't know what the hell they are talking about. They get all their "evidence" from creationist websites that don't know jack about evolution. It's like arguing with a 5 year old about Santa Claus.

The irony is that atheists are generally more knowledgeable about the bible than christians are because they just read the "good" parts.

Evolution is not disputed. It happens all the time. What is disputed is the whole ape-to-man arguement. Creationist get all in knots over that so they try to throw the entire theory out. When will they learn?

I know evolution is undisputed in the scientific community. In fact, I was amazed when I came here for the first time and heard it being "debated."

I just was awe-struck at sef567's answer. It seems to be the epitome of willful ignorance. He basically said, "I refuse to look at evidence that may change my belief. My belief is true!" This is really sad.

Most of it is disputed, but not over whether it happens, but over how it happens. That's the theory. It doesn't seek to prove that evolution is happening (we already know it is), but it seeks to explain the exact mechanisms and the reasons about why it happens.

Most creationists seem to get that confused.

Yes.

But only in the fine detail where new research is going on.

The core principals of change by mutation and natural selection is about as well established as the principal that masses attract in the theory of gravity. (where there are also disputes going in in the fine detail)

Who said it was disputed? I think even the most hard-line creationists would be forced to accept they are in the minority viewpoint among the scientific community.

it isn't disputed at all in the scientific community, only in the pseudo-scientific community, and no one takes them serious.
