Hi all I am curious as to how people can afford to have dogs if so many people tell them they CANT work a full time job and raise a puppy. I work full time and have two puppies and if I didn't work full time I wouldn't be able to afford them! My puppies 22 week old Aussie mix, and a 12 week old lab mix are both trained and neither are destructive. They love to have eachother and even when I am home they never leave each others side. I want to know what the big deal is as to why so many people on here put down others who work a full time job and raise animals. How else are they supposed to make a living? Have any of you thought that maybe these dogs lives were saved because people took them in from a shelter that would eventually kill them? To all you people who work and properly raise animals I praise you! And if anyone says you can't work and have puppies than those people obviously need a job other than sitting on here all day.

i agree that there are many people should not have a dog if they work full time. I am gone for abuot 10 hours during the day, i leave around 7:30 and don't get home till after 5. I do have a person that comes over to let my puppy out half way during the day. my dog is now 16 months, when he was younger i only worked 6 hours a day, but that was just a different type of job. It can be done. my puppy is very well trained, he listens to me, he does ok listening to other people. I'm invisible though if someone has a treat! lol. Its just about time, too many people get dogs and don't put the time into training them. I think that is why so many people discourage full time workers from having dogs. Its not about whether or not they can do it, its just about training, and giving the dog what it really needs.

I totally agree too. They do require a lot of attention...I have 2 dogs now and 4 horses all of which I take care of myself. It is expensive, but everything you do these days costs money.
Now for the people who preach that you absolutely cannot leave a puppy alone for 8 hours a day, I can't say I agree with that either. As long as you can contain the pup in a certain area, be it a kitchen, bathroom whatever that should be fine....That would really limit who on the planet could have a dog and who could not....People love to preach unfortunately.

Of course it can be done. In a lot of situations, there can be someone at home at different times so the dog(s) are not left alone for the better part of the week. Think about it. If someone works 40 hours weekly, add another 5 hours for travel time, and then sleep 7 hours daily....how much time does that leave for the dogs???? Then there are the other hours that people need to spend away from home...social time and shopping. What does that leave for the dogs? It is like part-time dogs.
I don't begrudge anyone from doing that, but it is NOT ideal, and I do not place puppies in situations like that. Just my choice. Others make a different choice.
Myself and husbad worked full-time when we had our first dog. we had to adjust our shifts so we could make ample time for the dog. We just had to work it out, or we would not have gotten a dog at the time.

I agree. My friend has a really hard time because her dog would literally cry all day so loudly that her neighbors would complains. Also the dog would go to the bathroom all over the house, and ruin her furniture, etc. . . .I never had any problems. My dog is older now, but when it was a puppy I still worked all day and it was fine! She was always glad to see us at the end of the day, and is well behaved and happy.

My neighbors work all day and leave the dog alone. They think they did it a favor to get it from the shelter, but it is the loneliest neglected dog I have seen. He sits in the backyard howling all day and torturing the neighborhood. I think they are selfish to own it and should have left it in the shelter for someone else who works less to adopt.

I work full-time and I have 3 dogs (2 under the age of 1, and one just turned 1). Never understood how people said that either, the little rascals are very expensive!!!

my husband and i both work full time and have 7 dogs that are a collection of his, mine and fosters. if we didnt work we couldnt foster any dogs because we simply could not afford to do it. all our dogs are trained and an asset to our family. im not saying there arent days when i come home and think "oh cripe, i need to take care of all these dogs!!" but even when im in that mood all the doggy kisses i get make me realize i wouldnt trade them for the world.

I've always said that I believe people CAN have dogs and work full time (I did it and looked after kids as well). They only need to be willing and able to spend enough quality time evenings and weekends exercising, grooming, training and playing with those dogs.
