The months between Jan. to March are the slowest retail sales months. During these months retailers are more motivated to work a deal on a ring. People fall for so called "Sales" during Nov & Dec but generally the retailers mark up the price just before these months so when they reduce the price people will THINK they are getting a deal.
Shop around see what you like and then pit one retailer against the other saying you saw rthe same ring for a couple hundred less at another store. During the months after Christmas the retailer will match or better the price at the ohter store you can then go back to the other store and see if they will better the new offer.
Good Luck, be patient and don't buy on impulse.

From a shopping stand point, sales are better before Christmas. From a service stand point, your sales person might be overwhelmed by all the shoppers and long hours, so you may not get to ask as many questions or get the kind of service you are accustomed to. The best way is to start thinking about what kind of ring you two might want (carat size, stone type, clarity, kind of metal....) and how much you are willing to spend. Go online or browse in stores and start comparing some prices before you settle on one.

Shop before Christmas for sure. I just bought my wedding band from Reeds. It was priced at $550 but I told the lady I wasn't sure if I could afford that (while my fiance' was standing there saying "just get it"). Well she went over to the calculator, came back, and said she could go down to $400. That's a $150 discount. Always try and see about a discount. Specially if you tell them you're planning on buying the bands from the same store.

Wait until 2-3 weeks after X-mas. By that time, people have spent any money they got for X-mas, and the managers at jewelry stores are sweating.

Buy about 2-3 weeks before Valentines Day.

I know from personal experience-I managed jewelry stores, and we were apt to give a discount in January.

I know there are a lot of sales on at the moment. We got my ring only last week at a diamond sale. It was over $1,000 off. I would never pay full price for jewellery. There is such a huge mark up on it. At least buying something on sale you are probably paying close to the actual value of the piece.
Besides that proposing at Christmas is very romantic.

I would shop before Christmas, maybe you'll find some good deals. After Christmas with Valentine's Day approaching, they'll increase prices.

buy now! christmas sales are better than what you'll find after christmas, when they start promoting valentine's day. jewelers don't tend to have very good v-day sales.

check out http://www.shopping.schubachstore.com. It's where I got my engagement ring, and they have a lot of holiday sales and even clearance items.

Good luck!

Diamonds usually are less before a Holiday, like a competition, especially if you choose a ring with multiple stones and specifically if you re checking department stores instead of jewelry stores, good luck

Many jewelers have sales right before Christmas, so you may have better luck then. As for purchasing tips, visit the link I added below. You need to research the 4C's, insurance, certification, etc.

Go before January. I was told that prices are higher in January due to Valentines Day coming. I am getting my wedding bands before the end of december even though our wedding isnt until April
