Like every Career I've heard of, there are mixed emotions and the Pro's and Con's of everything. I am currently finishing a associates in Architecture and want to take a change towards marketing. I have long term goals which will include these skills, and would like some input on the occupation. Are you, your friend, relative, in the field of Marketing? I feel this could be a new way to express my creativity but would like more information on schooling and the career in general.

I've worked in several areas of marketing. Some I like, and others I dont.

Marketing (thinking up an idea on how to sell the product)
Sales (selling the product)
Advertising (making the media messages to sell the product through TV, radio, newspapers, internet etc)
Promotions (extra freebies to help sell the products, such as contests & giveaways)
Market research (doing surveys)

I've done market research, promotions & marketing, but not sales or advertising.

Marketing is really just another name for sales. You will want to get a BS in Business with a marketing major. The creative end would be in advertising. Decide specifically what type of job you are looking for and tailor your classes to get the most relevent experiences. You will need at least a BS and preferably a masters. Its very competitive but there is definitely some money to be made there.

I have a associates in Network Admin. But my career is actually Marketing Director for a small company. I think you need to be creative for marketing. I don't actually do much with sales but my job is to generate sales. I have done this with newspaper publications, web design, brochures, mass mailings. I am actually interested in going back to school for the Bachelors in business but so far have done fine just being creative. I am not a pro thought and commonly refer to www.howstuffworks.com for help with all kinds of stuff.
