The female may have been in heat. They could still mate but produce no babies. When cats mate, it's seems brutal, the male bites her neck and pins her and holds still on top, I don't think any humping goes on. So it could've been either or. Usually a fight involves hissing and scratching then someone will take off running in retreat.

male cats will mount the female from behind or above and grab the females neck in their mouth when mating

neutered males may still try to mate with a female if the female has not been spayed as the scent they give off drives the males crazy

i have a male that is not neutered that keeps trying to mate with my female that is spayed (since the male is 18 years old and senile, its really funny to see him trying to hump the middle of the females back!)

in any case, its nothing to worry about, as long as one of them is fixed, you wont have to worry about having kittens!

Neutered cats can mate. They just don't produce babies. Usually they don't have the urge to mate, but sometimes they do. They may have been mating.

I believe they were fighting. Cats pretty much just hump when mating.

Keep them away from each other. Both can be seriously injured.
