Ive owned dogs from puppy to death since I was as child and for any one who is worried I dont run her untill she going to pass out just enough for her to want to lay cuddel and watch some TV with my girlfiend and I, She has to sit in her creat for almost 8 hours a day so after our morning walk I go to work and soon after so does my girlfriend so when I get home shes fired up and ready to go (shes a Lab) and I dont shine the light in her eyes or near her face.

Haha I do this with my dogs as well. They have an abundance of energy, and sometimes, after a long days work and their walks, I am just about done. So, I take out the laser pointer and they will play with it until I get sick of moving my arm around!!! The funniest part is that they will continue to look for the red dot for at least 10 minutes after I have stopped pointing it. Even funnier, the oldest one knows that the dot comes from "the thing in my hand", so she'll chase it and when I stop pressing the button, she will look up at my hand and try to take a swipe at it =)

Alot of dogs enjoy these. You can actually use it for target training. You can teach her things like getting a light switch for you. Say 'switch' and shine the light on the switch (I recommend putting some clear tape around the outside so her claws don't tear up your wall). When she touches it, tell her good dog and give a treat or whatever you do to reward. Repeat about five times and then stop. No sense overdoing. Two or three sessions a day is good. Eventually you want to only treat when she's actually moved the switch. After she's good at it, you can stop with the laser and treats but always tell her how smart she is. You can also teach going to certain places like her bed in the same way. Target training is great!

My dog is the same way! He's a 9 month old lab mix, and he is OBSESSED with the laser pointer! Unlike another dog I had, he knows that I control the laser pointer and that I turn it off. Therefore, he bugs me when he wants to play with it, which, once he remembers about it, is all the time.
But no, I don't think it's cruel at all. It is a great "lazy man's tool" to exercise, when the weather is nasty or when I can't walk long enough to please him.
Continue to enjoy using it as a fun diversion for your girl, but make sure to never point it at her face (obviously) as that can damage their eyes. Otherwise, exercise away!

That's a lab for you. Mine is 7 years old now and just starting to slow down a little. Labs cannot and will not stop when they are too tired or too hot. Their drive is too strong, so you are going to have to decide when she needs a break. If you don't feel like actively playing with her, give her a good chewy and her mind will stay entertained. They are very smart dogs, so they enjoy mental activities, like getting a treat out of a puzzle cube, as much as physical activities.

I had a dog that did the same thing....he would even think he seen it for hours after playing.....I am not sure why some dogs love chasing it, but I thought it was cool to sit on the couch and do absolutely nothing but move it around and watch him go crazy over it!

According to Cesar Millan, dogs live in the moment. Once you take away the laser pointer, within a few moments the puppy completely forgets about it!

No your not being cruel sweetheart, lots of dogs and cats just adore the laser pointers, can keep them amused for a long long time. When she is tired he will let you know. Enjoy it with her. You're a good person for worrying though.

No harm in short doses but at 7 months your pup's bones are still growing and too much exercise is bad for her, she could develop hip dysplasia with over-exercise. Although she has plenty of energy little and often is a better idea than hours of exercise.

My komondor likes to chase the laser pointer too. It's a lot of fun in the winter when he won't come in out of the snow, but it's just too cold for me to stay out there as long as he will.

Dogs can develop obsessive compulsive disorder when encouraged to chase "non existent" objects like torch beams, reflections, shadows etc. Not saying yours will, but it would be more constructive & just as tiring to do some obedience training (making it fun obviously)
