.308 or 30-06? Thanks

They are almost identical. Both shoot a .308 bullet. The .308 is a shorter fatter cartridge which makes it more accurate which is why it was the military's sniper round for years and the round used for 1,000 yard shoots. As for hunting, you won't be able to tell the difference in power. Here's a link to Federal's ballistics chart so you can compare velocities of the 2 with the same bullet weight. http://www.federalcartridge.com/ballistics/Ammo_Search.aspx?act=choose&firearm=1&s1=1 Hope this helped answer your question.

Not enough difference to notice for most folks.

In all bullet weights, the .30-'06 will be from 200 - 400 fps faster than the .308 Win. That really isn't enough to make a difference.

The advantage of the .308 is that it is chambered in short action carbines that are much handier than the average '06. The .308 also has a better reputation for long range accuracy. At one time or another, all the 1,000 yard target records were held by rifles chambered in .308 Win.

I'm just not a fan of the .30-'06. Not that it isn't a great cartridge, but I just prefer the .308 Win. But I like the .358 Win better than both other cartridges combined.

They are almost identical in velocity, but the 30-06 has just a slight at best edge. They are both actually the identical caliber bullet however, the 30-06 casing is longer than the 308...... 308 Winchester caliber is the more accurate of the two calibers at extended ranges. You will find the 308 Win caliber is used by 95% of all Champion Long Range Rifle Team members worldwide (Shooting 400,600, 800 and 1000 Yard Matches and Competitions. The Military also has adopted the 308 caliber foir it's various Sniper programs. The 308 Win also has the most different weights and bullet designs available as compared to 30-06 caliber.

They are the same exact caliber, 30 caliber. A 30-06 has a longer case so it hold more powder. That makes the 30-06 round/cartridge more powerful than the .308 Win.

There is not much differance. between the two. What ever you can shoot with a 06 you can shoot it with a 308.

The 308 is not a shorter fater cartridge they have the same base .473" the 308 is just a tad shorter. With the powders today and the bullets used in primimum hunting ammo they are neck and neck as far as killing power.

The only advantage really falls to the 308 because it can be chambered in a short action rifle offering a slim weight savings over the 06 in a long action.

In reality you are only losing 100fps at any range just about.

The .30-06 has an advantage over the .308 in ft. pounds of energy but the .308 seems to have a slight edge over the .30-06 when it comes to long range accuracy. Both are good guns for deer, elk, antalope or any animals of that size if that is what you are looking for.

30-06

They use the same .308' diameter bullets, but the .30-06 is longer and holds more powder than the .308, so it is more powerful. The .308 is a hunting version of the 7.62mm NATO round. It was designed for faster powders than the older .30-06, so it would achieve about the same velocity with 1950's loads. The .30-06 has more potentail if identical powders are used, since it has more room for powder in its case.

They are very close in power, but I think the 30-06 has the edge.

Your best choice is the 30-06 for all intents and purposes.**
