My guess would be a dog de bordeux (otherwise known as a french mastiff)

Would look like the dog in Turner and Hooch or the original Sand Lot
They are enormous.. and look even bigger in person than they do in pics.. They are not terribly uncommon, but are often mistaken for other types of mastiff.

It may have been any of these breeds....
Great Dane - http://www.pups4sale.com.au/great_dane_03a.jpg
Bullmastiff - http://web.syr.edu/~lrdeguel/bullmastiff.jpg
Rottie - http://www.1stopfordogs.com/images/dogs2005/rottweiler_puppies_for_sale_euro091.jpg
English Mastiff - http://www.elifveteriner.com/img/mastiff.jpg
Or any mix of those breeds! There are many possibilities, and if you can't really give us any color description or anything, it is harder for us to give you an accurate answer.
By the way, if it was that huge, I highly doubt it was a pit bull. Pit bulls CAN weigh between 50-100 lbs, but pits bred for breed standard tend to weigh about 30-60 lbs. So if it did have pit bull in it, it was either a pit mix, or it was one of the pit bulls that are bred to be "monster" pits (extremely huge heads, look like they're on steriods), even though that is not what the breed standard is at all.
"Height and Weight
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The American Pit Bull Terrier must be both powerful and agile so actual weight and height are less important than the correct proportion of weight to height. Desirable weight for a mature male in good condition is between 35 and 60 pounds. Desirable weight for a mature female in good condition is between 30 and 50 pounds. Dogs over these weights are not to be penalized unless they are disproportionately massive or rangy. "

Could it have been an Akita? They are huge Japanese dogs. Great Dane? Newfoundland?Great Pyrenees? Go online for a picture. It's kind of confusing. Pit bulls are not huge. Boxers have a short, pushed in muzzle, while doberman have a pointy muzzle.

it could of been a great dane, a mastiff, or maybe a saint benard. it could of been a mixed breed. after you get some ideas from yahoo answers, do a yahoo search of the breeds suggested. did it have long, or short hair? what color, or colors was it? i hope you find what you're looking for.
