Collins believes that altruism is the noblest of human traits, and is present beyond that which would be explained by evolution alone.

Evolution has shown that altruism to relatives preserves the genes you share with them, and is thus a survival trait.

I don't know how Collins said it (apparently you do), but it is easy to show that a community of humans has a greater chance of surviving than does an isolated human. Anything that supports community cohesion would provide an evolutionary advantage. Altruism is only an extension of loyalty and care shown by parents toward children.

Such altruism is seen in a variety of community-based organisms, including prairie dogs, monkeys, and meerkats.

if you act altruistically, females think you're sensitive and therefore you are more likely to spread you genes around.
