I think that it is sad that a person who is getting a puppy can not ask a question, without people jumping down their throat. DOGS ARE NOT HUMANS, it is great to have your puppy inside to socialize with the family, but do any of you work?? Do you pay for daycare for your pup? So are you telling me that you have your eyes on a dog at all times like a human child? Dogs are apart of the family, but don't take it so far to say sleep outside naked in the cold, would you send your 3 year old child outside to play in 53 degree weather w/out a jacket...no would you put a jacket on a dog?? Are you being cruel for not putting one on him? Are you telling me that if it is 32 degrees outside it is wrong for me to put him in the garage, because I don't want my house to go to shreds while I am at work? FACT is that dogs are apart of the family to some degree, you wouldn't leave a kid in the car, leave a kid at home while you are at work etc. Just give facts about dogs, don't get crazy!!!

Just to let you know, my puppy does NOT sleep outside, it was just a random question, and yes I do have a crate but I have read that puppies are not supposed to be in a crate more that 3 hours at a time so for those who crate the puppy while at work, how does that work out?? So what would be the proper degree, for my pup to sleep in the garage or I guess I should crate him in the house at night time?? point blank don't act like you spend your waking moments caring for your dog as you would do for children point blank there is a slight difference. If your dog/puppy bit your kid or someone elses really bad ,(even if he was trained) what would you.. do? By law what would you have to do? You can't take the life of a Human being for attacking someone, so I guess the law dosen't view pet as people or a part of the family. Sorry if you think you love your dog more than me!!

Dogs are social animals and the reason why your house might be getting destroyed while you are away is due to separation anxiety. I have 8 Siberian Huskies, all of my dogs are inside dogs. I'm a stay at home mom and full time online student. Sometimes I have errands to run in town, and I could be gone for a few hours. My dogs have plenty of companionship, but they would still become distraught if they were left alone.
I personally have crate trained them from puppies, so when I'm ready to leave; I simply give the command "In" and they run straight to their crates located in the garage that's fully insulated and I also put in a space heater to make sure they stay at a comfortable temperature.
I take my dogs out every day for daily exercise in the form of walks or playtime in the backyard. Hopefully when we get some snow, I'll be hitching up the dogs for a run on the sled and some skijoring.
If you haven't already, you really should get yourself a crate. It will save you a lot of home repairs and cleaning from a destructive dog who's left alone. It also ensures he doesn't get into anything that might cause injury to him.

No dogs are not humans, but they are better than some humans. Yes I work Monday - Friday 8-5 and I have a puppy. I would never EVER dream of leaving her outside. Does she stay inside and chew my house up? No, she is crate trained and I come home every day at lunch to let her out and play with her until she is old enough to be in the house alone. Dogs have fur coats, but some dogs need a coat. If you aren't going to treat your dog better than leaving it outside in the freezing cold, don't get one. Dogs protect your family, they try to make you happy, they are always there for you, they love you, you as their owner should do the same for them.
*EDIT*
You sound rather bitter. What is your deal? I spend as much time with my pup as I can. What would I do if she bit someone? Tell that someone not to mistreat my dog! She would never bite anyone and if she did I'm sure she had a good reason. I like dogs way more than some people! Oh and point black...I KNOW I love my dog more than you.

IF a puppy was to be left outside, you would have to have a well insulated kennel with a bed and plenty of blankets. As long as there is sufficient shelter and warmth, there shouldn't be any problem at all. The shelter should obviously have 4 walls and a roof. Also, being off the ground a bit would help to keep it warmer. Some dogs are actually happier outside than they are inside.
The people saying that keeping a dog outdoors is cruel can't be that well informed. - As long as shelter, warmth, food and water are supplied, the dog should be fine.
But I do agree with what a lot of people are saying about the breeds affecting this too. Dogs from Africa and other hot countries wouldn't have evolved to be able to handle the cold very well, whereas dogs from cold places like the Siberian Husky for example, would thrive in it.

If you did not have the time for a puppy, you should have looked for an adult. Puppies are ALOT of work. Shoving him in the garage will not solve the problem, or get your puppy trained.
I had my puppy while I was a stay at home housewife. He is already housebroken and trained. When I started working, it was not a problem. If I were to get another dog now, it would not be a puppy.
The best solution to have a pup while working is to CRATE it during the day, and have a friend/relative/neighbor.. SOMEONE come let it out at least once until you can return home.

Yes I have a dog, and yes I work, and yes he lives in the house. My dog is trained...he does not use the bathroom in the house, and never would. I do go home for lunch everyday, but then I only work 2 miles from my house. I take him outside then, gives us both a break in our day. I wouldn't have a dog that couldn't live in the house. Besides Max being part of my family, he is there for a reason and that is protection. He knows his job is too watch the house......he is a pit bull that I have raised from 2 weeks old and he is now 6. I am sorry you seem so hostile in your question. But everyone does think differently about the way treat their pets. But just everything else, this is my choice and my opinion.

When you buy or get a dog, you are taking on the responsibility for that life. If you don't plan to do the best job you can, then why even bother? Yeah it's a dog, but just like you wouldn't leave a kid in a hot car, you wouldn't do that with a dog either. If your dog is not trained, and you aren't teaching him to leave your things alone, you can't afford day care, and must go to work.. Then you can buy a dog crate like everyone else does. The dog crate helps with housetraining, and it keeps the dog from destroying your things while you are training him , and it also keeps him safe while you are gone. No need to risk his life outside in the cold, you can buy a dog crate.

You seem a bit like the crazy one...
No. It is not ok to leave your puppy in the cold.
Not because it is human, or whatever it is that you was going on about, but because it is not natural.
In the wild, a dog would be part of a pack. If it was going to be staying in one place for a lenth of time it would be huddled up with other dogs even if it was an adult.
I completely agree that you put your home before your dog, but you need to make some kind of compromise.
What my sister did was use a huge dog cage that was in the living room. When she went out the dog went into a cage and he seems quite comfortable in it. He sleeps in it also. It has a dog bed and some toys in there for him.
If you NEED to leave it in the garage go to a reptile shop and get a large heat mat, it will only cost about £15. Plug it in and throw loads of blanets on it. Then at least your puppy has the option to get warm... maybe throw in a teddy and some toys too.
They are afterall, social animals.
You need to make sure the area is secure also so they can't chew stuff.

I certainly wouldn't leave him outside if it was freezing out, but I don't see a problem with putting him in the garage when you don't want him in the house. There are plenty of dogs that stay outside all the time. Truth is, dogs are not accustomed to being in the house, do they build them in the wild?? No, I don't think they do. So, if you want to leave the dog in the garage sometimes, don't feel bad about it. Wouldn't you rather have him in the garage then in the house tearing up your couch....puppies love to chew on things when no one is around.
Good luck...

It's cruel NO MATTER WHAT.
If you work too much to keep your dog inside all the time, don't have a dog.
If you're too busy to watch a baby, what do you do? NOT HAVE A BABY. The solution isn't to chain your baby up outside so it doesn't make a mess in the house.
If you can't find a sitter for your dog or are too cheap and selfish to get it a kennel for inside the house or pay someone to take care of it, DON'T HAVE A DOG.
if you think you're right in doing this and that it's not cruelty to the highest degree because to not do it would inconvenient to you, you are not only a MORON, but also SELFISH and pathetic.

I think what everyone is telling you is that it is too cold to leave a puppy in that temperature. You should invest in a cage/crate. They come in all sizes. Place your puppy in the crate when you're not home and everything will be hunky dory! Not only that but after a couple or three months the puppy will more than likely not be going in the house anymore! Not even dogs like to lie in their own fecal matter and urine.
