Because they love you and want to be as close as possible to you.

They are looking for contact and step in front of you because you let them. :)
If you spent decades living with dogs, you should have trained them in a way that they don´t deliberately step in front of you. As the human being, you´re the boss. It´s never too late though. ;)
EDIT: Not(!) in the sense of beating them, what the heck are some people on here (answerer bit further above) thinking....duh.

It's not just dogs - it's cats, too.
Sorry I don't have an answer, but I am intrigued to know what the answer is! There have been numerous times where my very LIFE almost came to an end because a cat stepped into my path.

One of my friends has Australian Shepard's (sp) 2 of them and they like to herd everyone.... Especially my two little boys... It's kinda funny but, frustrating if you are moving through the house! I have a Rottweiler and she's constantly blocking my path and getting into my way.. Though she's a guard dog and that's part of her nature as well. The kids just push her out of the way... !!! I guess that's just the "nature" of the dog... !! Good luck

They want your attention. They don't realize that they are in the way. After all, dogs were not born with manners.

They want your attention. When one of my pets approaches me I always acknowledge with at least a quick pat. More if I have time. As a result, all my pets are very friendly.

Not trying to offend but you are park of the pack. You probably smell like them or your scent is familiar and they want to be around you.

They want attention and since they can't talk and are yelled at when they bark this is the best way they see to get your attention.

They want your undivided attention. You concentrate on your steps, they try to be in focal point of your attention i.e. in your way. Simple like that.
