Meaning it is manly or considered so if you eat this or drink this, and will earn you a more masculine reputation, but it actually does not put any hair on you (well duh!)

In Canada we say something will put hair on your chest if it's "stronge." Example: if your friend has a shot of straight Grappa in front of him and dosen't want to drink it, you say "c'mon it'll put hair on your chest."

It's an expression meaning that even if something is difficult it's worth doing.

I've also heard it as "it will put lead in your pencil"

Something "puts hairs on your chest" it makes you a man. Like, espresso. It is hard for boys to drink until they are a little older/used to strong coffee... Or a good beating because if you can take it like a man, then you are...well, like a man! and men have hair on their chest unless they are from east asia or england.

Doing such act (i.e. eating a certain food, drinking a certain drink) will increase your level of testosterone (i.e. increase your masculinity). Proof of this would be the increase of body hair (particularly on your chest).

In other words, doing the said act would make you more masculine.

This is usually just a statement not to be taken literally.
