One of my lunch mates find bone cancer recently. She had a surgery. After surgery she cough constantly even during lunch. She tried to cover her mouth most of the time. But not always. Because my white blood cell count is low, I am afraid that it is not safe for me to eat with her. But because she is friend and she is sick already. I do not want her feel bad. Any suggestions how to I deal with this problem.

Not an easy answer - Obviously cancer isn't contagious, but people with suppressed immune systems are likely to have a bacterial or viral infection if they are coughing constantly. She should be carrying tissues and using them to cover her mouth every time she feels a cough coming (and people around her should do the same). Maybe you could bring some small packages of tissues and offer them to your friend when she coughs, and also ask if anyone else wants a pack (so she doesn't feel singled out)

Both of you should be wearing a mask but not because of the risk of catching cancer. There is no such risk. If you have a low white count and your friend is sick with bone cancer, then wear a mask and then you can enjoy each other's company plus neither of you can catch an infection from the other. keep a mask in your purse or jacket and wear it whenever you want. Just tell people that you are sick and don't want to infect them, even if the opposite is your real fear.

You don't get cancer from a cough. If she has something else, like pneumonia or a common cold, she could be spreading that, but not cancer. If she coughs all the time, for weeks, she's probably just experiencing side effects from the cancer treatment or meds. But if she's sneezing and has other symptoms, you'd be wise to give her some space.

Cancer is NOT contagious. You can get a cold from anyone. If I was you I would talk to my friend and explain my low white count and ask her if she could cover her mouth. Not only talking to her start using good hand washing techniques. Keep purell etc on you at all times.
