I usually just mix up whatever's on my palette so that the brown is using the same shades that are already in my painting. I'll use reds and greens if they're on my palette, but I think any complimentary colors (blue/orange; yellow/purple; red/green) would work. Then you can add tiny bits of white (if you want it lighter) or black (if you want it darker) until you get the "brown" you want.

Many times when I was in college, I would use red and green mixed. Money was a little tight and I found this would work suitablly. Of course You can make tints and shades by using white and black. The problem with this is that it is almost impossible to get exactly the same color again. Just be sure that you mix enough depending upon the motif that you are painting. Good Luck and God bless.

Actually all of the above. It very much depends on the paint you use.

If you mix equal amounts of red, blue and yellow you can get grey but a bit more red an yellow and you have a shade of brown.

Don´t agree with the previous answer this should produce grey .I would use orange with a little black.
