i go to a 3rd level institute of tech, notices have been placed around campus asking people to go to debates (as part of the social studies students projects),these debates cover social topics such as racism, religion etc.

1 notice out of the 20 or so notices was titled "does religion play a part in our society" in the centre of this brief notice (about 5 lines in total) was a picture of the bible. Under the picture in small font were words to the following effect

"the bible -when all the works of science can be ignored by cattle sacrificing primatives who believed all animals existed within walking distance of noahs house".

- is this religious intolerance?

i made a complaint (granted it was made late on a friday) and someone said they would take it down, however it remained up until i left at the end of the day.

i realise its as part of a debate - but do colleges usually allow insults against one section of society to be displayed? does your univesity or college?

cant see that notice going up.

well - one way or another i think it'll be taken down once i call their marketing dept and ask them if they want a copy of the notice going to the local newspapers open questions section.
and or a phone in to the local radio.

yeah dominic c - typical ignorant answer from an ignorant little boy. the question, if youd take the time to read it, is not about the right of free speech. its about how there can be one rule in a campus setting for minorities and another rule for my demographic.
now before you welcome me to the grown up world you might want to arrive there yourself.

It is most definitely religious intolerance....

We all know that the people of the bible prefer sheep over cattle(ugh!)

But seriously it's very rude. You can debate a subject such as religion without calling it primitive, misinterpreting our stories, and/or calling us other rude things(which will happen in the debate)....

I'm not surprised by this however...

What if it were "Harry Potter: When the rational belief in lack of miracles gives way to a fantasy world of magical beings who through simple incantations and potions destroy you"?

Would that be intollerance?

It is a BOOK. It is not a person. It expresses IDEAS. Ideas are open to discussion, and if they don't hold up under scrutiny, they are liable for CRITICISM. Engaging in such criticism is not oppression, it is simply insisting that people take a rational look at what they are saying.

Now, excuse me. I have to go decapitate the people off who have tried to defile the user's manual for my 1977 Chevrolet Impala.

I think it's offensive, and I think you did the correct thing by asking that it be taken down.

Was this a student-led thing, or a faculty-led thing? If it was done by a student, I would just chalk it up to an ignorant individual. If it was college- or faculty-led, then I would definitely take it up with someone.

Freedom of speech...

If it's a student's project, you can't really get the school in trouble or make them take it down.

Poor persecuted 80% of the population...you must feel so unsafe...how can sleep at night with such hatred in the world against your beliefs?

Seriously, political incorrectness does nothing of great significance to majority groups. They could feel discriminated against, I assume....if they weren't still the majority group...

That's not religious intolerance, it's inflammatory advertising. It's also a fairly accurate description of the people who wrote much of the bible.

Sounds like whoever put it up needs forty lashes and a year in prison.

Or are we only being slightly intolerant of intolerance?

if the word koran had been used there would have been a riot... and the offender would..at least... have been kicked off the campus.
