well of course i know lord of the rings was meant to entertain and the bible was not, but how do we know that it's not just a fictional novel? and yeah, it has "many" authors, but so do the canterbury tales by chaucer.

and if these authors are fictional, you may ask, well who is the author then? well i ask you, do they know who the author of beowulf is? no, but it's a good novel.

i honestly think that the bible was a novel and that people just used it as a way to sway people to their own ideas, and for control, and to make a little cash.

think of the influence of the catholic church in brittain many years ago... one of the wealthiest establishments.

and of course there is nothing to prove that god doesn't exist, but there is nothing to prove that he does.

in my opinion, the bible has many good stories that teach good morals and ways of living and looking at thinks, but i don't think of god or christ as a divine being--just good fictional teachers.

because the power of God is behind the words of the Bible. Try reading it.

Lord of the Rings had one author and was written in one time period. The Bible has over 40 authors who lived in different time periods, places, and had different professions. The similarities between the messages within the seperate books of the Bible indicates that Christianity and the Bible's message is timeless. Lord of th Rings may be around for a while, but no way will it survive as long as the Bible has, nor will it ever be as widely read, as the Bible continues to be a top selling book world-wide.

If Lord of the Rings were a holy book I'd totally be religious. All Hail Samwise!

But yeah, nobody really knows what people were thinking when they wrote those bible passages. It may have just been the work of ancient self help healers.

There's no character development or plot. It's a horrible read.

Hey Ashley, guess what? The Iliad, the Aeneid, and Lysistrata are older than the Bible. They all talk about the same gods too, and have fewer contradictions. So, by your logic...aren't they more valid?

AngFlowr, read the Silmarillion. It's basically the Elvish Bible.

The bible was written to create a religion - the lord of the rings was written to entertain.

It isn't as entertaining or well written and lacks the continuity.

It's not like Lord of the Rings; Tolkein's works were far more believable.
