"VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict, in an encyclical released on Friday, said atheism was responsible for some of the "greatest forms of cruelty and violations of justice" in history."

Right!!! Like the Inquisition was caused by us baby-eating, demon-worshiping atheists.

He is filled with a large amount of a brown, disgusting, semi-solid substance that has been eliminated from the digestive tract of a sexually functional male bovine!!!!!!!

To imacatholic2 - You wrote, "I find it interesting when some people say that the proven and documented crimes against humanity of the Atheistic Communist leaders for the past 80 years cannot be blamed on Atheism but the almost mythical crimes of 'Catholic' leaders 800 years ago should be blamed on Catholicism today." - No, I'm not saying that the atrocities of Catholicism in the past should be blamed on Catholics today. I'm saying that the Pope should not blame the atrocities of some madmen who just happened to be atheists on atheism. That is exactly what he did.

Have you read Pope Benedict's encyclical Spe Salvi: On Christian Hope? Here it is: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/encyclicals/documents/hf_ben-xvi_enc_20071130_spe-salvi_en.html

I find it interesting when some people say that the proven and documented crimes against humanity of the Atheistic Communist leaders for the past 80 years cannot be blamed on Atheism but the almost mythical crimes of "Catholic" leaders 800 years ago should be blamed on Catholicism today.

With love in Christ.

Well I partly agree with him. All human beings have a dark side, atheists and theists.

Notice that he said that atheism is responsible for "SOME" and not "MOST" of the cruelty. MOST of the cruelty has been inflicted by religious fanatics. Only religion emboldens and justifies people to execute "the greatest forms of cruelty and violations of justice". There are too many examples in history and even today just ask the Christian conservatives who still think it's okay to smart-bomb Iraqis and collectively punish Palestinians and Buddhist/Islamist/Hindu etc extremists all over the world. Atheists are usually more god-fearing! But it's true that some renegade atheists have done horrible things.

He speaks as if atheism is a belief.
That is just what it isn't.
Where was he educated, for God's sake?

Perhaps he meant to say that people were responsible for the cruelty etc.
No one ever did anything in the name of atheism.

Well - you got to admit there's some truth in it - about as much as St Peter being the first Pope.
