I've been desperatly trying to get hold of my previous school in order to get a copy of a report from my year 10 work experience & a reference from one of my teachers to add to my CV. I understand ex-students will not be the highest priority but after emails, phone calls, letters I am getting nowhere. Can anyone think of any way I can work around this?

Sounds like you've tried all routes to get this information. Could you physically go down there and ask? Sometimes a body in front of you has more presence than an email or phone call.

Keep trying but, in the meantime, can you call those work experiences placements and ask them if they would be a reference for you?

Good idea is to keep all copies of reference letters written in a safe place and only hand out photocopies to potential employers when they ask for references.

I assume you have details of the Companies you worked for (and the name some-one at that company you worked with) ?

I would suggest writing to their HR Departments asking for a copy of their reports and also if the (named) person could they please write a reference ?..
