Cleaning out the garage I found boxes of floppy discs that I know I'll never use again, but they all have information on them that I don't want to fall into the wrong hands (bank/work info/ business letters etc.). How can I dispose of them safely?

I pulled mine apart and put the film through the paper shredder, it didn't take very long at all. Then I put the plastic in the trash.

Depending on the time they were in there theyre probably no good anyway......Most of the time a floppy left out like that becomes unreadable if its really a concern though i would either bake them for about 10 mins or nuke em, that should ensure that they are not read or even used again...
then just toss away

Hardly anyone uses 3.5" floppies, anymore, so just drop them off at your local plastics recycler. Nobody's going to take the time to read your presume dozens of discs, especially if the information is as old as you imply, so you needn't format or break them, but, if you're paranoid about it, the latter would be faster and, certainly, more fun! ;)

a magnet would work. you may still be able to buy one of those powered magnets from some place like radio shack.

i personally like to open each disk and cut the filmy disc inside.

or you could lay them out in your driveway and roll over them several times.

You'd have to get a powerful magnet and run it across the disks one by one.

A magnet will destroy the data on the disk.

That's why you don't put disks near speakers, the magnetic file corrupts them.

Two options..

Go through them and format the floppy. Or take them to a technology dump.

you are able to take them aside and recycle the springs and metallic risk-free practices sleeve. recycle the plastic caseing, yet i dont comprehend what you would be able to desire to do with the magnetic action picture disc interior.
