Both started with surprize attacks on the United States. One was a World War and other a Regional War. America today has the strongest and most modern Army in the World, but in 1941 that was not true, Germany and Japan had the most modern Armies; Six months into the WW11 The Battle of Midway was won by the United States, Six months after Bush Jr's. Iraq War started, the President of the United States George Bush had declared victory when the War was just beginning; WW11 lasted a very long time, but the Bush Jr. Iraq War lasted longer and is still going with no resolution on the horizen as of now. Bush has declared Victory and success repeatedly, but their has been no victory or success on the ground in Iraq where it counts. However, the Conservative NEOCON's assure us that victory is just a surge away, or maybe a second surge made up exclusively by the patriots that support it!

Night and Day. WWII lasted 5 years for the USA and had clearly defined goals and objectives. When those objectives were met, the war ended and the troops came home. In addition, the military strength of our enemy was relatively equal (until we gained the nuclear advantage), and it took a lot of help from the Russians to finally defeat Germany. Many textbooks ignore or downplay the Russian contribution, probably because of the cold war that followed.
In Iraq we have an overwhelming military advantage, however because our mililtary has been restrained by an unclear, undefined objective, They are forced to accept many more casualties than are necessary. This bungling lays squarely on the shoulders of Bush. He is not pursing any cause any more like WMDs or removing Saddam. This has now become about enforcing our will and installing a US friendly, puppet government that will lead to profitable trade relationships with US corporations. This is not the role of the military. In other words, we are using a hammer to set screws.

Bush really F*cked up. If he was talking about getting rid of Saddam Hussein, then fine, Mission Accomplished, but the aftermath of it, the insurgency, the civil war, the bombings, and all the other crap, was foreseen, but ignored.
Defeating Germany and Japan was a matter of building a military- industrial complex that couldnt be slowed or stopped. The battle of Midway was a battle of aircraft carriers, which luckily the Japanese had not destroyed at pearl harbor. Plus Russia bogged down Germany and China bogged down Japan, allowing the U.S. to catch up. We are fighting a different enemy in Iraq, just like in Vietnam. We are fighting people who like to hide and disguise, ambush and car-bomb, and generally be a nuisance. I never bought the (We have to fight them there, so we dont have to fight them here) nonsense. The American people are armed to the teeth, and dont need much of an excuse to pull a trigger. Let the terrorists come over here! BRING IT ON! They'd never 9/11 us ever again.......

In North Africa in 1942, the first battle between U.,S. and German troops led to a significant loss by the U.S. in Kasarine Pass. During the invasion of Sicily 161 gliders were used to insert troops onto the island. Only 29 of those gliders got in without loss of life on them. At the Battle of Tarawa in the Pacific they used land maps and not hydrographic charts which resulted in landing craft being ripped apart on the coral reef, forcing the Marines to wade ashore in the face of murderous fire from the Japanese. On Iwo Jima, the U.S. suffered so many dead that the senior commander of the operation, Navy Admiral Chester Nimitz, received a lot of hateful letters from the mothers and wives of those who died. Okinawa was a similar story in the loss of American lives. Plus, the Battle of Okinawa produced more Navy casualties and ships than those suffered in the attack on Pearl Harbor Those two island campaigns made the atomic bombing of Japan to end the war, instead of a land invasion seem like a gift from God.
And, throughout all of that, there wasn't a peep in the Congress about the conduct of the war! No savaging of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the press. Because the American people knew we were at war, could recognize that reality and exercise the patience and determination to see it through to its conclusion.

We weren't attacked by Iraq - we were attacked by Osama Bin Laden who is from Afghanistan and it wasn't a country or a country's military declaring war on us, it was terrorists from several countries. My opinion is that this war isn't being managed very well - but i'm not saying WW2 was managed all that well either. The circumstances are quite different from each other too.

You are comparing apples to oranges here. In WWII we were fighting an actual army that we knew where they were and could strike them in remote locations without the possibility of taking out innocent civilians. Now we are fighting a guerilla force that hides amongst women and children and thanks to legislations from our wonderful politicians, we cant shoot back without consequences.
