It means if you stick your nose where it doesn't belong you'll lose it.

In otherwords, don't interfere in things that have nothing to do with you.

It's one of those folk sayings...I doubt anyone knows exactly where it came from or when people started using it.

Cats are very nosy. They want to check everything out, like a grocery box or a plastic bag, or something new on the table. So when they come to sniff it out it often falls either on them or near by.
What it means, don't snoop around because something may happen that you don't expect.

Like a cat, who is known to be very curious, we can get ourselves into a situation by being too inquisitive, that could lead us to real trouble.
