I know that most people do it right after dinner--HOWEVER--I find that many people leave (elderly) or completely miss the photo op since they're socializing. My Photographer suggested to do it pretty much right when we arrive at the reception so that it will be done (and you can relax & socialize after the bouquet/grater toss and no longer be pulled from your festivities) and the hall can work on cutting & plating it for right after dinner. Opinions??

Thats what my best friend did. They walked in and went straight for the cake and cut it. Than had the toasting, dances and stuff.

Edit- No it worked out really nice. She didnt have a sit down dinner though. It was fruits and stuff like that.

We went to a wedding in Sept. The bride and groom cut the cake DIRECTLY after dinner... and than while they were passing out slices, started the dancing. After the couples/fathers/mothers dances.. everyone was done with their cake.... So most guest left! In about an hour after the cake was cut... there were 5 of us dancing on the floor.

Now, at my cousins wedding, they had the dinner... while folks were eatting dinner, they did the dances. Than we all started dancing... and about an hour or so after dinner... they cut the cake (closer to the end of the evening) By then, everyone was having fun and didnt want to leave!! The reception hall had to kick us out!

This is what we'll probably do, wait between dinner and cake... give people time to make room for cake, and keep people entertained and at my reception, which is a lot of money!

Cut it whenever you feel is right. A lot of people don't go to the reception, sucks because that's where the fun is! But if you think doing it before dinner will be right for you by all means. No one has to eat the cake first and once dinner is over whoever is serving the cake will have a bunch of pieces cut and no one will have to wait.

That and some people will want cake for dinner. My hubby and I never eat dinner we just go for the cake. :)

Do it after dinner. Of course people are going to see it. They wheel it out onto the middle of the dance floor and the DJ makes an announcement. It's just weird to do it before dinner. Oh we are cutting the cake and eating it but we haven't had dinner yet, and then we'll have more cake and let you the guest have some. If people leave early that is their problem, not yours.

We're serving a different dessert with dinner, and then having a separate coffee service at 10:00. We'll cut the cake at the coffee service. There will be a little break in the action anyway as the MC announces that coffee and cake are being served, so we'll take that little break to cut the cake (we're having cupcakes, so we're not worried about the time it takes to cut a big cake into serving pieces). That works with our set-up. I think what you've described for yours makes a lot of sense.

We got to the site, ate dinner, did the toasting and then cut the cake. Everything flowed really nicely, but we also had an awesome DJ, and I think that helped a lot. We took a little break after that and then started the dancing.

Im trying to figure out the same thing, which is funny bc I think thats what I said to your last question! : )

Our venue recommends walking in, cutting the cake, bride & groom go through buffet, guests go through buffet, and then cake is all ready to be passed out when dinner is done. Then toasting, dances, etc.

My first instinct is to cut it after we are done eating, because most of the guests will be eating still, but Im still torn! If we dont cut it right when we come in though, we wont really be doing anything except sitting down, because dinner comes first, then everything else follows, and I think it might be a bit wierd for everyone to be waiting for our big entrance and then we just go sit down...or just go thorugh the buffet...so I think Im gonna stick with the venue on this one, they have a lot more experience than me! Who knows, Ill probably change my mind after reading everyone's answers anyways hehehe good luck!

I'm getting married in May 08 and I plan on cutting the cake early. I'd figure after the first dance.

My husband and I cut the cake after we finished our dinner...other people were still eating, but the DJ announced the cutting of the cake, so we could get pieces ready for when people were finished. It worked out really well.
