More than likely, he is grinding his teeth while sleeping, very common. He may have TMJ ( temporomandibular joint). TMJ is in the front of the ear where the upper jaw meets the lower jaw. When the joint doesn't work properly, or becomes inflammed ( swollen), it leads to headaches, locked jaws and other issues. If this is the case, TMJ can be treated with a mouth guard that is worn during sleep. It is best to have your son evaluated by his dentist. If it is TMJ, he will be fitted for a mouth guard. I have TMJ. I hope that this helps. Here's a web that you can review:

If he continues to complain about this, or it has been going on for awhile, he should see an orthodontist that specializes in TMJ (temperomandibular joint syndrome), his jaw could be out of alignment. Also his most likely, grinding his teeth at night in his sleep which can be easily overcome with a nightguard.

He may grind his teeth in his sleep. This is a common problem. You might want to do a little research on the net because it could cause some dental issues down the road.
You can buy a plastic mouthpiece in the drugstore that alleviates the problem. Consult with the dentist.

Might also be from chronic teeth clenching (either when sleeping or awake). This is common for stress relief. Check with your doctor, as it may be a habit that needs correcting.

This can also happen if he was chewing gum for an extensive period of time. Sometimes this happens with out us realizing it and we are sore the next day but don't remember why.
