Is it just the 'issue de jour'?

This is mostly being driven by the fact that the GOP challengers all running in the primaries, where comparatively small portions of the electorate can make or break a candidate. People who feel strongly about an issue, any issue really, are more likely to vote in the primaries than people who don't. And illegal aliens make a very attractive target since they can't vote anyway. So, the Republicans are very down on illegal aliens as long as they aren't Cuban. Cuban illegal aliens are very very good. So good, they aren't even illegal.

Most of the GOP challengers spend their time trying to prove they're even more militant on the issues than the other fellows, not just immigration even if that is one of the topics their study groups believe they can beat up on the Democrats with. You'll notice they spend less and less time talking about the war, as it's not something they are likely to be able to use against the Democrats.

Watching them try to outflank each other on the right on Guantanemo was certainly instructive. Mr. Mitt would like to double the size of the prison. Really, why? GW has spent the last year or so trying to find ways to get rid of most of the detainees as they have no particular value, but it's hard to find countries willing to take them. So, Mr. Mitt has no real reason to double the size of the prison, he just wants you to know he's the grandest tiger in the jungle. He just doesn't want to you to remember his jungle was in the Bluest of Blue states.

In any case, you can be sure whoever wins will be singing a more moderate tune when they run in the national election where small interest groups have much less impact. You'll see the same thing on the Democratic side with the various candidates trying to flank each other on the left, for similar reasons, but we're talking about Republicans at the moment.

It is what the people want and have wanted for a long time.
It is not the issue de jour.

Remember over TWO YEARS AGO the Republican controlled House passed HR 4437, known as the enforcement only bill. It was the DEMOCRAT controlled Senate that would have no part of enforcement. Teddy Kennedy, Dianne Feinstein, Dick Durbin et al had to have amnesty. For two years the Dems have been trying to shove amnesty down our throats and for two years the situation has continued to get worse. Yes there are a few Rinos out there, including Bush, but for the most part the Dems have voted overwhelmingly for the amnesty plans including the DEM darling Hillary.

Something needs to be done and it won't be the DEMS that do it. They will pass amnesty which, as history has shown over and over again, will only bring MORE ILLEGALS.
Not to worry though, They will simply pass another amnesty.

More Democrats have employed illegals than Republicans. I do not include RINO's and Neo-cons as Republicans because they aren't!

No - this is an issue very few politicians will touch with a ten foot pole and we will elect one who will.

What are you talking about. Rudy Guiliani had sanctuary city set up in New York for all illegal aliens. He is practically a Democrat!

I agree. When you employ an illegal alien you pay lower wages, you do not pay social security, payroll, and income taxes. You do not pay for health insurance, and workman's comp. You do not pay for overtime, holidays, and vacations. You do not offer sick pay. Think about all the money you are saving!!.
Why would you destroy your own gravy train. Be hard on the victims - the ones who work for you under the table and make you even richer than you are now while the rest of us pay higher taxes so we can pay for your employees health care, children's education, housing, etc.

ROmeny was found to have employed them indirectly in the past. A contractor or gardner he uses, employs illegal immigrants. In the past, hiring illegal immigrants kills a persons ability to run for President.

If you don't think people think it's a big deal in the past, watch "Wag the Dog."

Possibly because Dubya was so soft on them, and it's thus a way to distance themselves from him other than clamouring for defeat in Iran.

Because they know their main supporters (like myself) are pissed about it. After the election, who knows what they'll do? For myself, they'd better keep their promises this time, this issue is potentially dangerous and VERY volatile.

Pre-election, they say what they believe will get them votes.

Behind the curtains, they cheer about illegal immigrant labor, because it "strengthens our economy" by lining their pockets.

Because Americans care about illegal aliens, and the GOP is actually representing the PEOPLE.
