am talking in asian market preferably in philippines... how true that the displayed LCDs in the showrooms of leading brands are somewhat using "enchancers" or gadgets (that are being hidden) just to show their units are more brighter and sharper..compare to any brands..

please advice

thanks

I used to work for a major electronics retailer in their TV department. I can't speak for other stores, but generally we took the TVs out of their box, and connected them to a satellite cable feed off of a HD satellite box. We did have a couple of hard drive devices for showing off some TVs, but very rarely did we ever change any of the TV's picture settings. The TVs are set up from the manufacturer with high contrast ratios to look good under the lights of a store, so you will need to change them when you take it home.

When I did my sales I made sure to tell the customers that they were watching a HD source, and I would someimes try to change the channel to a non-HD source to compare the picture quality for them. Biggest thing to be aware of is that unless you have an antenna and have a town that has over-the-air-HD, you will have to pay more to get HD picture on your new TV. Also make sure you are using cables capable of supporting HD picture on your HD box. Connecting a HD box to your new TV with S-Video doesn't cut it, you need to use either component cables (red, green, and blue) or HDMI.

Well this happens in the US as well. The stores try to make the TV's look as good as possible by:

- Turning the brightness & contrast WAY up to be 'eye catching'
- Using a HD source, not standard def to display the image.

They are not 'fooling' people so much as showing real HD signals on the HD televisions for sale.

Side note: The number 1 reason people return HDTV's in the US is because they bring the unit home and it look like crap when they plug in the old standard def signals. (3-5 postings per day here on Yahoo Answers on this topic.) The stores/salesmen do not tell the customers they should upgrade their CATV or Sat service to HD when they buy the televisions.

So it's not a problem specific to Asian markets - it a 'consumer education' issue.

The only thing that most manufacturers and resellers do to get people to buy sets is use DVD or hard drive recorded material to display on sets. I wish they would use real TV signals with real TV antennas and real cable connections. But alas doing that properly for each set is a costly process.
