Mormons are not spies, but some spies may be Mormons.

The Church does not permit their buildings or missionaries to be used against the governments of host countries. When East Germany was Communist, there was a significant LDS membership. The Church was scrupulous to prevent any impression that they were organized against the laws of the country.

I've heard that the FBI and CIA do recruit heavily from our returned missionaries... for a couple of reasons.

1) Integrity. Our church firmly believes in strong personal integrity. "Thou shalt not bear false witness" is taken as a commandment of God that is still in force today.

2) Confidences. Our returned missionaries know how to keep a confidence. Our temple ceremonies are sacred, so we don't like to talk about them much (like you don't hear married couples talk a lot about what happens in their bedroom). We understand the value of respecting things like that.

3) Language. Many of our returned missionaries served in foreign countries, and have already been taught a second language.

4) Talent. Our church encourages the development of a wide variety of talents and skills. These abilities would come in handy if an agent were placed in an under-cover position.

I heard of a mormon maffia, I am not sure about this one, all I know is during a parade in the 80's in SLC, UT, one of the Pres. of the LDS church was in a car, waving at people and he had CIA/men on black looking people walking next to the car looking for snipers. It was liek he was the Pres. of the US.

For the CIA. The government loves to have Mormons in those type of positions because many speak more than one language and they are trustworthy.
