No. The long, successful relationships I have are based on a commitment to the relationship no matter what is happening. We respect each other and our differences, so when things get rough, we work it out.

I usually hang on to relationships for 3 to 5 years, my last stint earned me a wife. The other ones ended because expectations were not met for that point in my life for the other. Mainly being poor college student, or military portions of my life. One saw past all that and waited for the wealthy businessman part of my life, and she was very happy for the wait. We've been together 10 years and have 3 kids, 2 cats and a guinea pig.

I have been in two long-term relationships in which we broke up and got back together. In the first one, we broke up, each of us worked on our idividual problems, then began the process of getting back together. We managed to stay together for about a month before we decided we were better off apart.
In second relationship, we broke up, but we called each other every day. After a few weeks, we started dating again, and slowly got our relationship back together. We stayed together two years after that, but ultimately, it didn't work out.

Once, I was in one where we broke up about 6 times over a 3 year period. Now, if I get in one and we break up once, its done. If you cant work through it while together, odds are it will never work.

Any relationship I've been in, we've stayed together to try and work things out...we only broke up when there was nothing left between us.
