to decide if others are "true Christians" or not?
I mean, isn't being a Christian about our own personal relationship with Christ? Why is it that some people feel the need to tell others, "Oh, well you aren't a TRUE Christian like you claim to be"?
Seems sort of self-righteous to me.

I'm not sure. I don't think anyone can know someone's heart except for God.

The authority is the Bible. As Romans 8:9 says '... but if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him'. So if you deny having the indwelling Holy Spirit then you are not a true Christian.

It is not self-righteous. It is keeping the wolves from the sheep. John mentions that those who were not of them left the believers because of lack of true faith. Paul admonishes us to anathematize those who do not teach the true faith.
Personal relationships with Jesus Christ are a modern convention. God has always dealt with a people, a group. One bad apple ... as they say.

A Christian is a Christian because God made him/her one by His Grace, and not anything we can do (nor should any man boast according to Eph. 2:8-9)

Only God knows the heart of a person. I don't know anyone who is telling me whether I'm a true Christian or not. But I do know there's no one who can do that. It's between me and God.

It's incredibly self righteous. Condescending to others is the only way some people can find to feel better about themselves.

You are correct.A true christian is anybody who accepts Jesus as his saviour and believes in the word of god,no matter what denomination they are.
However I also have to say that some of the christian in-fighting seen on this forum amuses me.

its a way to make themselves feel better. If other people are somehow less, then they are more. Their place in line is secured because all these others are behind them. Its all very childish, immature, ignorant, and shallow...but hey, we are talking about christians here, so if the shoe fits.
