Althought heartfealt the last answer was simply misinformation. War laws were nationalized after the creation of the United Nations, WW2 was not the direct cause for the UN but it was a very large influence in creating it.

Incidents like Nuremburg were more isolated, the concept in the whole is what caused the outcome not one of the many incidents.

War Crimes have always existed. As you say the Romans, Egyptians, Greeks all carried out war crimes, they just were not called to account for it, since the legal and political structures were not in place. Let us not forget that the USA has NEVER been called to account for the 13 million indigenous people they exterminated in setting up "The Land of the Free", "The Stalwart Defender of Democracy and Freedom".

The first time that war crimes come into play is right after world war II, when it was decided that key german officers would be held trial at Nuremburg. You can find plenty of information all over the net on the nuremburg trials.

The Trials at Nuremberg started it, after WWII. Hitler's autrocities were so great that the whole world agreed by treaty to create that status.

I think it was after the Holocaust, you know cause it was so terrible we wanted people involved to account for their crimes and send a warning so it would never happen again. But it looks like you miss the old days, so you probably don't care about that warning do you?
