I actually do understand how they could be offended (I don't agree, but understand). I don't understand how a peaceful religion would think lashes are an appropriate way to address the matter. Would not a helthy conversation with the offender, and a public apology be more appropriate?

Agreed, it's more about the unreasonable punishment...Remember though that we're dealing with a society that believes that a thief should have his/her hands cut off for stealing to feed his/her family. We don't agree and that is also a penalty that's too harsh. I understand punishing an action that insults or harms...but to whip someone over a Teddy Bear name is absolutlely NUTS! PEACE!

I don't understand. For an insult there has to be an intent to be insulting and in this case there clearly was none. I don't know how the school secretary who reported this unfortunate woman can sleep at night.

This was a political matter - nothing to do with an offense against culture - because of protest against the persecution of non-Muslims in Darfur.

My point exactly! I think that her intent was not to cause harm but her actions were out of pure ignorance. She couldv'e been educated on the matter or in Islamic studies in general. She couldv'e been made to apologize as well. Lashing her, deporting her and or jailing her isn't going to really educate her. I'm not saying that I disagree with them nor am I saying that I agree with her but other meausures couldv'e been taken as well or instead. I understand their anger as well.
