I tried budgeting once and it didn't work for me.

The thing is to make sure you budget in the things that are important to you. And find a format for it that works for you. The budget my husband and I use doesn't work for everyone because it feels cumbersome to them. But it's enabled us to be debt free (with the exception of a car loan) for the last 15 years.

What keeps it from cramping your style is to know that you want this big thing (financial security, a family vacation, a retirement home...) more than some of the little everyday things.

I have always believed in managing money so that it works for me and not me for it. I pay myself 10% sometimes more when possible, then the budget is set out in a 5 colum notebook. Helps me keep track of what I paid, when it got paid off and what if any balance is still owing. At the top of the list of every expense, goes the 10% pay myself. In addition to things like a savings account, retirement accounts and so on to think about for that one day when I won't want to work, I'll have enough diversified funds to enjoy the leisure life I planned.

I know I should budget, especially for Christmas! But, I've got to admit it does cramp my style. How can I put a price on presents for people I love?

It cramps my "style" big time! But I have to admit, if I didn't have to account to my husband for every penny I spent, I would probably go overboard, I have done that in the past, I would be likely to do it again. I am banned from going on to e-bay because I went a little nuts with all that was out there for the buying. That is what caused my husband to crack down on my purchasing in the first place, live and learn!

I have never been able to stick to a budget, but I DO find it important to live within my means!

A budget is very helpful... if you stick to it. That's the hard part.

If you truly want financial freedom, you have to learn to control your money, rather than it controlling you.

That will actually free you up, rather than being enslaved to your money and debt.

A BUDGET IS VERY HELPFUL, IT IS HARD TO MAINTAIN, ESPECIALLY AROUND THE HOLIDAYS, BUT YOU GOT TO BE STERN WITH YOURSELF.
