Permanent = overall, much less .. however there MAY be some Companies who are in a desperate hurry to fill a vacancy ...
Managers and HR Staff are up to their ears in "end of quarter" figures PLUS they all want to go on holiday .. so recruiting is typically 'put on hold' until after New Yr. (in practice, mid Jan)
HOWEVER, some Companies operate a Financial Year end = Calender yr. end .. in these cases Managers will be desperate to fill any vacancies since chances are, by default, any unfilled vacancies will be eliminated from their next years budget ....
Temps = huge demand for Temp staff, especially in retail !
(also pubs, restaurants etc etc)
Also, a significant number people take a 2 week holiday 'somewhere warm' over Xmas/New yr .. so there will be some increased demand for Temp office staff ...

I've heard it is a lot more difficult to get PERMANENT positions for Christmas.
On the other hand, during this busy period, businesses are desperate for temps, beause they can use them for as long as they need without much extra cost.
So if you're lookng for some cash over the Christmas period, my advice is sign up for a temping agency, and then try for a permanent position in January.
Good luck :)

i dont think a lot of places would look for someone permanent over the xmas period, people are either very quiet around that time & dont need anyone or else they're too busy & they'd only be takin on temporary staff. I would wait til after xmas & then try.

A lot of places are looking for season help, but if they like you enough there is a very good chance they will keep you on after the holidays. It's happened to me more than once. Good luck

There probably aren't any longterm positions, but there are a lot of seasonal positions if you are looking for a job in retail.

People who get jobs at the UPSP or at UPS or delivery places like that oftentimes get hired for a year if they impress enough.
