I asked this a few months ago :)
I managed to find out that most people with a penicillin allergy can eat blue cheese without being affected, in rare cases it has the same affect as penicillin.

Blue cheese is made with a type of mold called penicillium. There are many different types (species) of fungi within this genus. A few produce the antibiotic penicillin. Most do not. P. roqueforti is the mold used for making the blue cheeses Roquefort, Stilton, Gorgonzola, and Danish blue. P. Roqueforti does not produce the antibiotic penicillin. That is why most people do who are allergic to penicillin can eat blue cheeses without a problem. Occasionally some penicillin-allergic people will react to a blue cheese. This is not cross-reactivity: it is a reaction to a different allergen as there is no peniciilin in blue cheese. Some people are allergic to several things.

Gosh, that's a good question! I'm allergic to penicillin too, but I don't like bleu cheese so I've never had this problem :-p I've never really heard that we would have to avoid bleu cheese, you would think that your doctor would tell you that. You should visit an allergist to A) get re-tested to make sure you're indeed still allergic to penicillin (if it was a childhood allergy, you might be fine now) and B) ask them if you can eat bleu cheese. Good luck!

Yes, you can. I am allergic to penicillin and eat blue cheese. It's a different kind of mold.

Actually penicillin is derived from a particular kind of bread mold. Cheese mold is completely different. If in doubt, just try a small piece of blue cheese. If you have a reaction within 30 minutes, don't eat any more.

I am also allergic to penicillin but have never had a problem with bleu cheese. In fact, it's my favorite dressing.
