A wedding only costs as much as you want it to. It really depends on what is important to you on your special day. I got married two years ago (anniversary next week) and we spent under £2000 in total. We decided that we would rather start our married life financially sorted than spend a huge amount on that one day. For us it was all about the rest of our lives, rather than 'the wedding'. Despite not spending a huge amount of money we still had a beautiful day and I wouldn't change a thing about it! Enlist the help and talents of friends and family and you'll be amazed how much money you can save. (For example my mum made the cake and bridesmaids dresses, and my sister made all the invitations by hand as a wedding present). When working out how much you're going to spend, check out the different options available for the main expenses; venues, food, dress etc. Once you know what's out there and how much each option costs then you'll have a clearer idea of what kind of budget you'll need to save for.

Look out for bargains; my wedding dress cost £60 because I got it from a factory outlet. (Monsoon). Buy things like wedding shoes on ebay, I got mine for £15 (brand new) unlike the £75 + starting prices you see in bridal shops! Our biggest expense was the food for the wedding breakfast as we fed just under 100 people.

The main thing is not to feel pressured into spending huge amounts of money just because lots of other people do. Good luck, I hope you have a wonderful day!

I'm getting married in July next year. I want a simple but traditional wedding. We set a budget of £6500, already it's been stretched to £9000. You can go over the budget on some things it's your day. Don't spend what you can't afford thou, you don't want to be still paying for your big day on your first anniversary.

I find it crazy that people think they should spend a fortune on getting married. My husband and i had a brilliant wedding in a country lodge (whole of the place to ourselves) and that with clothes food and the ceremony cost less than £3000 TOTAL.
We were married in November and it was a warm sunny day, my sister in law was married in the middle of July and it was freezing cold and raining!

To the reply above mine'
£50K are you crazy! all the people starving in the world and you spend that, im sorry but i find that disgusting

Spend whatever you feel you can honestly justify. I'm getting married around the same time and I'm buying my dress from ebay (brand new but from an online store so less overheads). It isn't about being stingy but it is about having the best day possible and enjoying it. Regarding wedding guests, a good rule of thumb is not to invite people you haven't seen in the past 2 years. My mum wanted to invite all her friends, but I've said no, anyone can come and see you get married free of charge and they are welcome to come and watch, but I want a small intimate reception, not one the size of Posh and Becks!! Hope this helps, good luck!

we are spending about $15000. we're having 100 people and I would consider everything "nice". We didn't cut too many corners, only stupid ones like invitations and we're doing our own simple orchid arrangements. But we didn't go all out...no buffalo tenderloin like we originally wanted, no chair covers, rehearsal dinner at an upscale pizza place instead of nice italian restaurant.

We splurged on the venue so we didn't have to worry so much about decorating.

simple and elegant.

A nice church wedding with all the trimmings, but maybe not the most expensive flowers, cars, reception can be done for about £5000

My wedding was £7,000 but that was including the honeymoon, we had a civil ceremony in a hotel and then had the reception and evening reception there as well. It was fabulous, it depends really on how many people you want to invite..

I'm getting married in August next year and its going to be a big wedding as I have a large family, so hopefully it will cost around £35k but I've set £50k aside for it as budgets always increase.

Just remember to spend money on the things that will remain with you- photos, dress, suits etc. No one will remember if you had sparkling wine or champagne!

Good luck, and remember its one day in your whole life so you may aswell go for it!

good luck

No offence (if you are religious) , to take your vows 'in front of G.O.D' is bad policy because it doesn't take into account modern lifestyles. Generations of our family have simply gone to the local registrar's office. I think the average spent one wedding days was about £500. When I see couples 'getting hitched' at a cost of £10,000 , this is total nonsense. They may indeed get d.i.v.o.r.c.e.d within 3 years. Cut your budget to the circumstances. It's only a piece of paper after all.... call me cynical!!!. YES
