Well, we tend to focus on the extremes of everything. I guess we could blame the media for this. Nowadays whenever someone mentions the word "Christians", we would immediately think of douchbags like Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson, even though the majority of Christians are nothing like them.

I guess the same thing is true for Islam. People always think either some terrorists trying to blow up something or Taliban people that spread the rein of terror on its people.

Spanking is not a "positive" act.

Spanking is a neutral act, when used correctly.
It is a punishment to show that one has to be mindful of consequences, and provides immediate and lasting "correction" in the form of an inability to sit properly for a few hours.

Spanking is a criminal act when used incorrectly.

Lashing - when performed correctly is a judiciously used form of relatively minor corporal punishment. However, most - if not all - people whom perform the act are zealots more interested in causing harm than correction. In other words, it is an outright torture as opposed to a corrective act. A corrective act should be painful - when it involved corporal punishment - not deliberately crippling.

Incidentally, "Lashing" is NOT unique to Islam. It is still used in some non-Islamic countries, and in the case of European countries and North America, was abandoned as a) inhumane, and b) it doesn't work. Heck...the old-times navies used it until the 17th-18th centuries...

Lashing is punishment prescribed only for certain acts, like fornication. It is not a punishment prescribed for every single thing that happens in the world.

The court found the teddy bear teacher guilty and gave her 15days in prison rather then 40 lashes and 6 months, what she originally could have had.

Lot of stuff is just culture in the name of Islam. Those people think they are acting in the interest of Islam when they themselves lack proper islamic education.

No confusion. There culture allows this type of punishment just like ours use to allow spanking. To them, I'm sure it is for the same reason, to instill fear and respect in the one being lashed and to show the spectators what could happen to them. Dr. Spock says it won't work

Lashing someone 40 times, probably really really hurts. Haven't you ever the films about the navy centuries ago, when the guy get's tied to the mast and lashed? It's nasty.

It could be positive if it acts as a deterrent. It could also be negative if it is used for crimes/non-crimes that don't deserve it. E.g. if I drop litter, should I be lashed? Sure it will deter people from dropping litter in the future, but surely it would be a crime to lash someone for dropping litter? Why not just shoot them? That would be a deterrent too.

Hmm, no confusion here. Islam is violent, no matter what the peaceful counterparts say, considering that Sudan is screaming out. It's not like it's a small majority. They say that violence is not part of Islam...then the Pope says they are violent and they they prove him wrong by killing a nun.
No one tried to assassinate Mohammad Ali....

Then someone names a teddy bear (pretty peaceful...) and they go throw a temper tantrum. Anyone remember the comics in Poland or somewhere around there? They went nuts!
I get sick of it. I see Jesus and Christianity being made fun of all the time in vulgar ways. For example, I saw a profile just a second ago called "Jesus likes it up the butt". How vile is that? People think it's ok. But no no! When Mohammad is insulted, woe be unto you!
Mohammad the Prophet, HA! He never made a prophecy....

Look what was done to Christ...I don't think any suffering we receive in His name comes anywhere close to what happed to Him.

Was His punishment justified? No.

Should one get lashed for naming a bear Mohammed? No.
Should people get lashed for naming anything anything? No.
Are people just stupid? Yes.
